Blu-ray technology takes the small is beautiful' route

Blu-ray technology is closely following the path of that for playing and recording standard DVDs, in getting considerably smaller. One of the world's leading electronic equipment manufacturers has just unveiled a Blu-ray player and recorder combined with a hard disk drive, which weighs just 2.2kg or just under 5lbs and has a 320GB hard disk capacity. This is familiar territory for the leading technology companies, who see size or lack of it as a major selling point for nearly all of their products.

Blu-ray is considered by the technically-minded to be the next step up in technology from the standard, and still most common format of DVD. The term blu-ray comes from the laser which is used to read the content of the discs. The big benefit of blu-ray discs over the standard DVD format is that they contain two layers of recordable capacity, meaning that double the amount of material films or photos can be recorded onto a single disc.

A dual-layer blu-ray disc boasts 50 gigabytes of storage space, against the standard 25 for a DVD or single-layer blu-ray equivalent. Portable blu-ray players are the latest iteration of the evolution of the medium. Competition among the main players competing in the field is intense, meaning that new innovations are brought to market relatively quickly, giving the buyer the benefit of the latest advances quickly.

There is no doubt, though, that one of the big benefits of Blu-ray technology is its ability to store large quantities of data. A standard dual-layer Blu-ray disc can accommodate about 23 hours of standard-definition video, and about nine hours of high-definition programming. Of course, portability of Blu-ray discs is again a major advantage of these over the use of an HDD player.

It is also claimed that, due to new types of hard coatings which have been developed, a Blu-ray disc is more resistant to scratches and other surface imperfections. And if the format is to be developed especially with portability in mind, then this will be something which Blu-ray users will be very pleased to know.

In the long-term, Blu-ray is expected to supersede DVD as the pre-eminent format for portable audio and video, and the speed with which new players with new capabilities are appearing suggests that manufacturers and retailers are staking considerable investment in that happening.
