Blueprint Of Terror: The Warrior Past Of The Muhammad Andthe Leader
Over a billion people practice Islam
Over a billion people practice Islam. Like Christianity, Judaism and all the religions that came before, it has a bloody past. While the vast majority worship in peace, and live among those of different faiths.
Second only to Christianity numbers, Islam like many faiths, started off with humble beginning, but that faith never would have survived if not for Muhammad's military prowess. All modern religions have faced persecution from the dominant religion of the time. While today, the freedom of religion is a widely accepted concept the world over, in the time of Muhammad, it would have got you crucified.
Muhammad was resourceful when it came to warfare. What he lacked in experience he made up in ingenuity. In time he built a comprehensive intelligence network, reformed his people's style of warfare, and became Islam's first insurgent leader. His style of warfare let him dominate the region. These tactics and beliefs are still being used by the enemies of the democracy today. If we're going to with this fight we must first understand the man who said, "All war is cunning."
Muhammad began with only a small group of guerilla fighters, but after only a decade, he marched on Mecca with a large conventional army united under a single ideology. He was a charismatic leader who believed he was God's Messenger, and believed he was on earth to deliver God's plan for a better society. He surrounded himself with a small, but talented group of converts. His first goal was to conquer the city of Mecca, but he was far from ready, so he based himself in Medina, and began conducting ambushes, raids, that caused economic havoc by attacking caravans.
At the same time be began converting nomads to his cause, and made it clear that every man, woman, and child needed to dedicate all they had to supporting the faith. He was so successful that when he did capture Mecca he did so with some 10,000 soldiers, a far cry form the 300 he had just six years prior.
His success for growing his numbers is due to the fact that followers were recruited from the fringe and poor of society. He outfitted his army by stripping fallen enemies of supplies and equipment. When he did take prisoners and ransom them off he demanded weapons rather than gold for their return, so in time his converts were among the best equipped troops of the time.
When it came to dividing up the loot, Muhammad ordered that everything should be turned in and shared equally among all those who fought. Those who were most loyal to the cause found their status and wealth improve under his leadership. He shared the spoils of war with families who had lost people in the cause, and even compensated non-Muslims who helped their cause. Everything was for the community or ummah, and as his force grew the most loyal was rewarded with wealth and important positions.
By the time of his death Muhammad had laid the blueprint for future Islamic armies to grow and flourish as they spread their faith through conquest. To this day his doctrine on total war is still followed by many. In war, any adult male was a possible target with the only acceptations being slaves and monks, and while women and children weren't supposed to be targeted if they were supporting the enemies' war effort all bets were off. While there are rules about how to treat prisoners, torture is not out of bounds, and women taken prisoner can be made into slaves and used sexually.
While modern scholars believe that jihad should only be for self defense of the faith, this is twisted to justify the actions of the insurgents in Iraq, Pakistan, and Afghanistan who still adhere to what they believe are traditional Islamic beliefs.
Muhammad was a prophet who made up for what he lacked of military experience by surrounding himself with talented and devoted followers to compensate, so like today one only needs to inspire while leaving the details and the dying to others.
The people we're fighting today believe they're doing god's work, so until we're able to change their minds we must keep fighting them on the battlefield and for the hearts and minds of the people around the world. Muhammad only started with a handful of men and simple goal, but he was determined and those who want to destroy the United States are no less motivated.
