BMW 7 SERIES - Ticks All The Boxes of A Prestige Saloon

The 7 series was first launched in 1980 along with many other main line BMW models. The latest is the fifth generation of 7 series and it is not much different in looks from the car it has replaced. In reality it is by all means a new car with a new platform and body shell. With a very broad range of petrol and diesel engines, excellent handling and all the high tech gadgetry any car can have now a days, the 7 series ticks all the boxes of a prestige saloon. In 2012 the 7 series received updates in styling, cabin and hybrid version was introduced making it the direct rival of Lexus LS600h.

The new 7 Series has gained more weight and has more higher and vertical nose. At first the 7 seven series looks more like a longer 5 series than a different model. The front gets a new grille and front bumper plus there is an option for Adaptive LED headlights. However, the cabin is luxurious and stuffed with hi tech gadgetry such as 3D satellite navigation system, night vision camera and an audio system by Bang & Olufsen. It has a longer wheel base that means an excellent leg room. The 7 series is amazingly quick for a car of its size. The high tech Drive Dynamic Control comes as standard across all versions and has five settings, ECO PRO, Sport, Sport Plus, Comfort and Comfort plus which makes the drive more thrilling than many smaller cars.

Optional electronically controlled four wheel steering is also available which increases the control around town and makes the ride more engaging at higher speeds. The suspension has been improved by fitting new rear shocks, bushes and air suspension but still it fails to give that smooth ride which one would expect from an executive saloon of this class. The 7 series hasnt received a Euro NCAP rating as they dont test cars that are so expensive, but there are only few cars that can match it in safety. All models come with a generous safety kit including eight airbags, adaptive xenon front and rear lights that get brighter the harder the you brake, electronic stability and traction control as standard. Apart from these, there are many optional safety gadgets that include night vision, a Head Up Display System and Lane Departure Warning.

With 500 litres of boot space and huge rear leg room the 7 series also scores high in practicality. The boot has a soft close tailgate as standard which doesnt disturb any of the passengers when it is shut. A nice high tech touch is the feature where the boot lid can be opened with a wave of leg. The SE version gets rear camera which is much needed when parking the car of this size. As any other car of this class, it is not cheap to run a 7 Series bu it is still better than some of its rivals. BMW offers 5 years or 60,000 miles free servicing with all models. The 730d is the most efficient returning 50.4mpg of fuel economy with 148g/km of carbon emissions. The diesel engines account for most of the sales but the 7 series has the worst residual values and loose much of their price in first few years.
