BMW Diesel Engine: Power, Performance And Consistency

The legendary Bavarian Motor Works produced many notable cars in last few decades. From compact executive saloon to high performance sports cars and from sedans to coupes, BMW made a name in all categories and built its repute as a true drivers car. Companies like BMW, Mercedes and Porsche has proven to the world that German engineering is far superior to its American and European contemporaries. BMW specifically is considered the most reliable yet high performing German automaker, Porsche being another strong contender but its focus remained on producing two seater sports car whereas BMW produces a more versatile array of vehicles, including coupes, family sedans, SUVs and roadsters.

Over the years BMW remained one of the few automakers who manufacture their own engines and even provide engines for other car manufacturers as well like Lincoln, Noble etc. BMWs engines include straight 4s, Straight 6s, V6s, V8s, V10s and V12s running on petrol or diesel, V10 and V12 were petrol engines and no equivalent diesel engine was developed. From 1983, BMW started including diesel engines in its engine lineup. BMW diesel engines were launched considering the changing trend and consumers outlook towards petrol engines. Furthermore, diesel engines proved to be more economical yet produced similar output, compared to their petrol counterparts. These diesel engines expanded BMWs model array, to make it better compete with other German and American manufacturers like Audi, Ford and Chrysler.

BMW diesel engines were mostly used in bigger sedan, BMW 5 Series and 7 Series, though 3 and 1 Series also included diesel engine in later years. Additionally these diesel engines became an absolute necessity with launch of X3 and X5 SUVs. With increased taxes on Co2 emissions and urge for offering another greener fuel, diesel engines again became useful, as they are low in Co2 emissions.

BMW diesel engines have improved drastically in last few years so much so that Top Gear ranked BMW 520d as the best 5 Series among all of its variants. Even M5 was dubbed a second choice as its performance difference is marginal compared to 520d but price differential is huge. Though by no means the 2.0 litre turbo charged diesel engine in 520d produces 500 bhp, it produces a meager 184 bhp, but that is considered sufficient for a rear wheel drive, executive sedan by experts. However, the biggest 3.0 litre diesel engine from BMW produces 381 bhp, almost 80 more than an equivalent petrol engine from BMW.
