The reason why BMX-ing is so perfect as a sport of amateurs, is because it is a uniquely versatile sport, with a near infinity of things to do on the bikes, as well as a huge range of kinds of bike, perfect for all sorts of riders.

If you are a beginner, for example, then the chances are a freestyle BMX bike will be most suitable. This because a freestyle BMX is built for riding well..anywhere, and therefore it is more than likely the BMX you'll see catching air in an urban landscape.

A freestyle BMX is best suited for beginner riders exactly due to its versatility, and even if you have just started out, their inherent durability and quality will ensure that your start off your hobby in the correct way.

As you progress as a biker, then you might find that you become a more specialized rider, and perhaps develop a penchant for BMX racing. If this is the case, then you will need a racing BMX, which will differ from a freestyle BMX in that it is specialized for racing, rather than for durability etc.

Of course, as well as the kind of bike, the cost of your bike is likely to change as you become more advanced.
