Boating Beacons, Signs, And Other Aids To Navigation

Beacons

Beacons

A "Port Hand Day Beacon"

marks the port (left) side of a channel or the location of a danger during daylight hours and must be kept on the port (left) side of a pleasure craft when proceeding upstream;

with a black or green colored square centered on a white background with a green reflecting border; and

may display an odd number made of white reflecting material.

A "Starboard Hand Day Beacon"

marks the starboard (right) side of a channel or the location of a danger during daylight hours and must be kept on the starboard (right) side of a pleasure craft when proceeding upstream;

with a red colored triangle centered on a white background with a red reflecting border; and

may display an even number made of white reflecting material.

A "Range Day Beacons"

These beacons are a very important part of Aids to Navigation.

They are always built in pairs.

They usually mark the centreline of a channel.

The rear range mark is higher than the front one.

They are rectangular, twice as tall as wide, and have a central vertical stripe.

When range marks are lined up ("in range"), that means that you are on the line of position they mark.

To navigate through the channel maintain a course that keeps one marker aligned top and bottom with the other. The recommended course is when the two markers are lined up vertically.

Signs

Posted Command Signs or Warning Signs Include:

No wake zone signs;

No anchorage area signs;

Speed limit zone signs;

Low head dam hazard signs;

Power line hazard signs;

Pipe line hazard signs.

Boating Restriction Signs:

The Boating Restriction Regulations indicate there are five types of shapes for the restriction signs:

No internal combustion or steam engine permitted

No power driven vessels in the direction indicated by arrow

No skiing north of the sign

Power limit / Standardized speed limit (normally 5,10,25,40,55)

No power driven vessels in the hours and days in red

The frame colour is international orange.

Signs with a section with a green border indicate that a special condition applies to the restriction. The symbol on the sign indicates the type of restriction that applies.

If the sign is arrow-shaped, the restriction applies in the direction pointed by the arrow
