Body Transfer Results Last Two To Three Years

A recent study suggests that body fat transfer to the under eye area lasts at least three years

. The study was conducted over a period of four years and the results were published in the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery. Drs. Cory Yeh and Edwin Williams, from the Albany Medical Center in New York, tracked photos of 99 people who had body fat transfer surgery between 2004 and 2008.

Fat transfer, also called fat grafting, is a technique used to add volume to certain areas of the body. The study focused particularly on the area below the eyes. This area commonly loses fullness as people age, often as early as their thirties.

During the fat transfer procedure, fat is taken from a fattier part of the body, like the thighs or buttocks, then processed and re-injected below the bottom eyelids. Autologous fat transfer is the use of fat from the patients own body.

In the study, the doctors found that at least some percentage of patients monitored did retain the results of body fat transfer for three years. Photos were taken of 99 patients at different points of time following the surgery. A team rated the amount of improvement shown in the photos compared to their pre-surgery photos, without knowing when any of the follow-up photos were taken.

Two to three years after the procedure, the doctors only had data on 22 of the original 99 patients. Of those patients, 14 percent of patients had no improvement from their original photos, 68 percent had mild improvement and 18 percent had marked improvement. The results show that, at least in some people, transferred fat does stay in place for two to three years. The study did not look at results beyond two to three years post-surgery.

Synthetic fillers can be used for plumping the face as well, but autologous fat transfer has a higher success rate with fewer risks of complications. Among possible complications are lumps underneath the eyes following surgery, asymmetrical results, and prolonged bruising and swelling. Follow-up procedures can correct asymmetrical results or lumps.

Every patient responds to surgery differently. In general, the results of body fat transfer do not last as long in elderly people, smokers, and people who exercise frequently. As people continue to age, the results of the procedure will change.

The patients followed in the study were between 35 and 71 years old, and the group was composed mostly of women.
