Body's Have Plumbing Systems Too
Your body is just like your homes plumbing, it needs to be flushed and cleaned regularly to run efficiently
. Clean the drains occasionally, and eat lots of fiber for the plumbing to run sailing. Do you remember the steps of digestion from high school health? Here we go the nine steps of digestion for your body, pay attention:
Step number one this is where the fun begins. The teeth break down the foods you eat. Their job is to tear and crush the food so it can fit down our throats. This is where babies struggle, no teeth, no chewing, lots of chocking going on.
Step number two is saliva. That wet stuff in your mouth actually is a chemical that helps to break down the food. Spit into a cup and add some bread, see what happens. I've never actually tried this, but it might be interesting to an eight-year-old boy.
Step number three is the best part, the tongue. The tongue is a muscle that helps mix the food and saliva together. This step is also when you taste that delicious food you are eating, this has nothing to do with the digestive system, but it is the best part of the whole process.
Esophagus, now there is an exciting word. Who doesn't love their esophagus? Its job is simply to transport the food from the mouth to the stomach. Easy enough. You don't want your food to end up in your windpipe or lungs. Therefore, while a simple job, it is important.
You have arrived at the stomach. The stomach uses chemicals to further reduce the food. The stomach churns the food for several hours until it is a cream-like liquid. Hmm, sounds delicious. The food is still not small enough for our blood stream so off it goes to the liver for use. Water is an important part of all this. Drink lots of water for better health and lots of fiber to keep everything running smoothly.
The sixth step in digestion is the liver and gall bladder. The gall bladder mixes bile from the liver for further breakdown. It breaks down fat from cheese and butter to use as energy later on.
You are almost there; next at number seven is the pancreas. It also adds chemicals; these are for breaking down carbohydrates and proteins.
Lastly, steps eight and nine are the small and large intestines. The small intestines are about 22 feet long, and they are called the small. This is where the real job of digestion takes place. The food is now small enough for absorption by the body through the walls of the intestines.
Whatever the body cannot use, it goes to the large intestines that will come out later. The body is just like home plumbing, it drain cleaning, good plumbing, a good plumber and lots of water to keep it flushing nicely. That ends today's lesson on the digestive systems and plumbing!
