Boise Blows It

Myself, like many East Coast football fans found themselves in bed at halftime of the Boise State vs Nevada game. Why not? It was nearing midnight, and the Broncos were up 24-7, with a dominant performance on both sides of the ball. Game over, right? Turning that TV off was a big mistake.

Imagine my shock to wake up in the morning with a text from ESPN's mobile alerts. "Nevada ends Boise State's 24 game winning streak, upsets Broncos 34-31." Uh, what? Nevada won the game? Boise only scored once in the second half? C'mon, man.

Taking to the internet, I evidently missed perhaps the greatest ending to any football game, ever. An ending that will be talked about for a very long time around Boise, and around America. The Boise defense was picked apart by the Nevada rushing attack of Vai Taua and Colin Kapernick in the second half. Though Nevada was able to come back and tie the game, it appeared as if Boise had things in control, with an 86 yard screen pass touchdown from Doug Martin.

Little would anyone know, it had only just begun. Kapernick was able to strike for the tying touchdown with a little time remaining on the clock. The game was headed to overtime. Well, not if Kellen Moore had anything to say about it. Titus Young made one of the most remarkable grabs of the season, and certainly one that will be largely forgotten, to put the Broncos in field goal range to steal the game away.

Unfortunately, normally reliable kicker Kyle Brotzman did not get the memo. Brotzman was unable to connect on a 27 yarder to win the game. A bit of controversy ensued, as many felt the kick went in. It didn't. Making matters worse, Brotzman had a chance to put the heat on again in overtime. He came up short, and Nevada took advantage.

And like that, the Broncos go from title contender, to on the outside of the BCS. What a game, college football is.
