Boise State Football- Then & Now
The Boise State Broncos football team has come from the depths of nowhere to become a football program to be noticed
. You didn't hear or see of the Bronco football team mentioned in the elite class of college football until the more recent years. During the past 11 seasons Boise State has a total record with 9 conference titles. Boise State currently plays in the Western Athletic Conference(WAC).This conference isn't exactly a powerhouse but Boise has made it more noticed in recent years. Boise moved over from the Big West Conference in 2002.
However, the football program became really well know beginning with the 2006 season. 3 perfect seasons over a 5 year time span. Somebody awoke this sleeping giant. Maybe it was the critics saying they had no competition. A team with a definite advantage when playing on their home turf. Not losing a home game in about 5 years. That's hard for any team to accomplish but this is Boise State we're talking about here.
What a shocker to everybody. A team that once was never a factor & now turned into a legit contender. A team that comes from a smaller conference & goes undefeated. A smaller school actually playing in a BCS bowl. Not only playing but winning the 2006 Fiesta Bowl against a powerhouse football program in Oklahoma. Maybe one of the greatest bowl games in recent history. How could this "sleeping" giant beat a giant that's been awake for years? A somewhat surprise call to try a 2-point play to win the game. The only team to go without a loss in major college football for the 2006 season. Now, this football program we never heard of has awakened all college football fans alike. How did a school like Boise make it into the top 10(#8 rank) college football polls? How did a school like this beat a school rich in football tradition like Oklahoma? Well, this victory & season showed football fans everywhere what a Bronco could do!
Boise State had another great season in 2009. There was no way they could have a better season than the one in 2006, right? Well, I think their record & outcome speaks for itself. The team finished with another perfect record with a 14-0 mark. The season was capped off with a victory against TCU in the 2010 Fiesta Bowl. This was only the 2nd time that a college football team had finished a season with a 14-0 record. There was no way this could happen to a school like Boise State!
What does traditional mean in this case ? It means something that we're grown accustomed to over time. Well, in this case can you say "blue"? Boise State football plays home games on what's called a Field Turf. The odd thing is the turf is not the color we're used to watching games played on. All other college football games are played on a green colored surface. However, Boise chose to color their field blue back in 1986. It hasn't changed colors since. It may look weird to us but the fans of the Broncos have been doing this for nearly a quarter of a century. I wonder if they feel they're watching the "Smurfs"?
