Bol: What Is It?
The BOL is an important piece of the documentation which needs to be included any
time you're shipping something with a courier company, especially important when shipping overseas or across any international border. BOL stands for bill of lading, and any courier service in Chicago that is making deliveries for you should be able to provide you with a bill of lading with any order that you ship with them. This is going to include all of the information relevant to your shipment.
When the BOL is put together, the courier company is going to fill in most of the information which is specific to your shipment. The physical details will be included to begin with, that is to say, where the pickup of the cargo is being made from, and where it is being delivered to. It will also include the time that the package is picked up, and when it is supposed to be delivered.
The financial details of the shipment are also going to be included. It will show how much the package or cargo is worth (important for insurance purposes) and how much was paid for the shipping. There may or may not also be information about taxes that have or have not been paid.
The bill of lading is one of those critical documents that absolutely must be sent with everything that you ship on an international basis. When items are moved across international borders, the customs people are always sure to check all the applicable documentation. They do this in order to be sure that all the applicable fees and taxes have been paid before goods are allowed to move into their country, as well as to make sure that no smuggling is taking place.
Because of this careful scrutiny that takes place at border, is a bill of lading is either missing, or incorrect, you could expect your shipment to get held at the border. This can cause massive delays for your company, so it becomes one of those critical elements which you must be able to depend on your courier company for. There are other documents which can also be important to getting your items across international borders, like shipping permits or commercial invoices, but you can be sure that it's always going to be critical that your courier have a proper bill of lading ready to send with your shipment.
