Bolivia The Hidden Gem of South America

Having recently returned from Bolivia, the wonderful hidden gem of South America, I thought it was time to provide some interesting insights into this enchanting country.

Bolivia does not have any access to the Pacific or Atlantic Ocean but it shares the shores of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, with Peru. With such diversity Bolivia can easily fill a holiday, however nestled between Peru, Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Chile it is easy to combine a holiday in Bolivia with its neighbours.

One of my highlights was visiting the majestic Tiwanaku Archaeological site. Prior to my visit in 2009 there was a lot of controversy surrounding the Akapana Pyramid, with UNESCO halting the restoration work being carried out as there was no evidence it was being returned to its original state.

The Tiwanaku is an ancient civilisation 1500BC 1200AD, are thought to have covered a lot of ground in both Bolivia and Peru. Having spent a longer time conquering than the Incas there is a great deal of evidence how they evolved during their time. From the on-site museum to the small shack of a museum on the island of Parity on Lake Titicaca (where artefacts were discovered following a plane crash in 2005) all these archaeological finds are in wonderful condition. Continuing on to the Textile Museum inSucre you can really immerse yourself in this incredibly interesting ancient civilisation.

This wonderfully diverse country includes the Altiplano, making Bolivia a very high country. I would definitely suggest an acclimatisation period upon initially arriving in the country. The infamous Butch Cassidy chose this mystical altiplano to hide when he was planning the great robbery and where he spent his last days.
