Book Review: The Girl Who Played with Fire

In his second book in the Millennium series, it is absolutely apparent that Stieg is inspired by the crime and murder mystery writers of the world

. The pace of this book though not as fast as the first one (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), it does give the normal ups and downs of any racy detective novel by the likes of Enid Blyton, Agatha Christie and Sue Grafton. There are references of these authors and many more in several parts and gives the same feeling as the books in their genre.

As a sequel to the previous book, this one also published posthumously, the author dives deeper into the life of the protagonist. We see a lot of investigative journalism from the Mikeal, who in this novel is more prominent as he is trying to help his detective friend Lisbeth from imminent capture, which is where the story takes off from the sexual exploitation and violence theme of the previous book. There are issues in the society which have been dealt with in this novel too. Sometimes one is left wondering as if these were true stories blended into a fictional tale of crusaders for the society.

The story develops well from the beginning and the incidents and characters are woven very well into this book. "The Girl Who Played with Fire" complements the previous book in the series and compels to take up the next as soon as you finish this. Subtle flash-backs refer to the back story of Lisbeth, which is good. One pointer towards the drawback I saw, there is a presence of too many characters slowly getting embroiled into the plot and the many sub-plots in the book. The reader may have to deal with this in their own way.

The best thing about this sequel is the slow development of the pace which towards the end leaves the reader wanting for a quick finish to the suspense of Lisbeth hanging on to her dear life. At the end, I guess this book is more to do with why and how the protagonist becomes what she is today! This is one of the very good fiction books I've come across.
