The Secret of Wolf Canyon: A "Pennsylvania Woods Super Sleuthhounds" Juvenile Fiction Mystery

Marsha Hubler

Pages: 171

The members of the Pennsylvania Woods Super Sleuthhounds, Woody, Moo and Taz face a series of difficult mysteries in The Secret of Wolf Canyon. This group of precocious sixth-grade girls is on an adventure at a summer camp for junior sleuths filled with rivalry, encrypted clues, and strange happenings.

The Sleuthhounds, headed by Woodrina aka Woody, arrive at Garrett's Gumshoe Getaway, a Christian camp for junior detective training, excited and ready to jump into the action. Their task: To discover the location of stolen Civil War era gold coins. But this is not the only mystery the Sleuthhounds and the competing groups of girls and boys must solve during their stay at the camp. Each leg of their expedition requires that the four groups stretch their detective skills to move closer to their goal. Along the way, unexpected events threaten the camp members' progress and safety.

Hubler is an educator and author of several books including the "Keystone Stables Series." Her writing is perfect for the middle school audience she focuses on in this book. Hubler has mastered the voice of this age group. Her characters are believable, realistic depictions of kids driven by a single passion. The transformation that one of the, shall we say, less focused kids in the story makes, is fundamental to the message of Christian love which is the theme of the book. There is a combination of excitement, adventure, and wholesomeness in this story that makes it a wonderful addition to any middle schooler's library.

The Secret of Wolf Canyon is a great book for junior sleuths and other kids with a love for action and adventure. It offers great writing, wonderful characters and a positive theme that will be appealing to parents, too. I highly recommend it.
