Booking A Walking Vacation For The Lycian Way Can Be Fun
The Lycian way is in a very beautiful part of Turkey
, and offers the chance to take in wonderful scenery and sights. It is quite tricky in parts as it can b e a bit steep so if you have any difficulties walking you need to plan your route to miss these parts. It starts in Fethiye and finishes in Antalya which is more than five hundred kilometres. It is rated as one of the top walks in the world.
The majority of people try to do this walk in spring or autumn. It is too hot to do all of the walk in summer although parts are shaded enough to try. Care needs to be taken if you are planning to walk it when the weather is hot.
The whole area around the walk is full of history and stunning scenery. It used to be inhabited by the Lycians who were one of the earliest civilizations. Their sophistication and culture can be seen in the many interesting ruins that are left behind.
You can either choose to go it alone along the Lycian Way or you could join one of the many organized tours. There is not really anywhere to stay along the trail. If you decide to walk it by yourself then you will have to be prepared to carry all of your supplies and camping gear. It does make for a truly back to nature experience.
If you prefer a little more comfort then you could do one of the many organized tours. These will book you accommodation in a local hotel, provide packed lunches and drinks and transport to and from the walks. It can be a very good way of completing some of this walk.
There are lots of things to see on the walk so make sure that your itinerary covers at least a few really big sights, and gives you enough time for sightseeing. The ruins of the old city of Olympos should not be missed, and nor should the beach nearby which is often used as a film set. The Gelidonya lighthouse makes for some stunning photo opportunities.
The highlight of the trek might be reaching the top of Mount Olympos. Its over two thousand metres high and although the trek is challenging it is well worth it for the magnificent views. Its in the middle of Beydaglari National park. You need to plan your walk to the summit quite carefully as it cannot be done during the winter months because its too snowy. Its best done in summer or early autumn. The Lycian way may be a little too ling to do in one holiday which gives you the perfect excuse to come back.
