What is this strange phenomenon called Rocket Yoga

? The Rocket is a well-known form of Yoga that is prevalent in the United States and growing in popularity around the globe. You may have heard of this unique yoga style somewhere along your yoga journey, but what is it, where did it come from and how exactly does it work you wonder?

During the 1980's Larry Schultz, a presently recognized individual in the yoga world, studied Ashtanga Yoga with the great master Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois, renowned creator of the Ashtanga system. The Ashtanga system as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India is made up of 4 series. Although rewarding, practice was a challenge. Taught as a sequence of poses, a student would learn the primary series first, serving as the foundation to all further series. A student who was unable to complete a pose in the primary series was unable to continue to the advanced poses of the second, third and fourth series. This style of teaching made it difficult for students to progress to the higher series of Ashtanga Yoga, restricting their practice.

A devout and passionate student of the Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga practice, Larry had the desire to take Ashtanga yoga back to his home in the west, and share it with others in his community. However, the way the series was taught in Mysore demanded intense practice, discipline, flexibility and strength of mind and body with the focus of life being Yoga. Larry found that the western lifestyle, although intrigued by yoga, begged a different and more inclusive method for teaching which allowed greater participation within the community. Thus The Rocket' was born.

All of the various Rocket routines (Rocket I, II & III), which combine poses from all the series of Ashtanga, renew energy and vitality in the body, and are accessible to all levels of practitioners including beginners. Promoting a spirit of change and freedom in the practice as compared with the original primary series, the Rocket routines have gained global recognition as a feel-good experience.

Full of back bending and spinal twisting, this sequence of postures is designed to wake up the nervous system. Frequent hand stands and arm balances keep the energy level high and encourage students to connect to their inner power and build strength quicker than though traditional practice. Students who practice The Rocket open up their bodies, clear their minds and finish feeling refreshed, refocused and restored. The playful and upbeat Rocket routine is the perfect counter to the soothing forward bending of the Primary Series.

Take a flight on The Rocket! This vibrant routine "gets you there faster."
