Boosting employee morale in the workplace is something that every good manager should know how to do, and that most good managers find themselves having questions about from time to time.

You may be wondering why employee morale is down in the first place. There are many reasons why morale may be down. The best way to find out why workplace morale is down is to take an anonymous survey of all the employees asking them about their morale, what improvements they would like to see in the workplace, and if there's anything they would change about their jobs.

Taking the morale survey is also the first step to boosting morale. To fix a problem, you must first identify the problem. Once the problem has been identified, you can then identify how to fix it.

If a lot of your employees fill in the survey with the same complaint, try to fix that complaint as soon as possible, as long as it is financially reasonable.

Also, try to offer your employees "just because" bonuses. These bonuses are given to employees to let them know they are integral parts of the company and their work is appreciated. For example, some forms of bonuses are: monetary bonuses, gift certificates, and complimentary gym memberships. Everyone like to receive free stuff, especially free money. Also, everyone likes to feel appreciated.

Employees need to know that their jobs are important. It can be frustrating to employees to toil on at work, working only for a paycheck. Let them know that they are not just earning money for themselves, but helping other people. For example, being a janitor can be a tough and dirty job. Remind the janitor how much people appreciate being able to use a clean restroom, and how that would not be possible without his or her hard work. The janitor is important to the functioning of the company and maintaining the morale, cleanliness, and health of fellow employees.

Keep in mind that you can not just boost employee morale with a quick fix. Morale is something that needs to constantly be evaluated and re-boosted as necessary.

Also, keep a positive outlook when trying to boost employee morale. Seeing the manager happy will in turn make the employees happy. Seeing the manager upset is a source of worry for the employees. If you present a positive vibe, employees will in turn try to be as positive as possible.

One more important thing to keep in mind while boosting morale in the workplace is to add a personal touch to everything you do. Learn the names of your employees and promote a "family" atmosphere. Employees do not want to be just mere numbers in a system, or a nameless face. Employees are happier when they feel that the have a personal identity in the company. Let the employees know you are interested in getting to know them, and want to make sure that everyone gets along. Happiness promotes further happiness. If everyone works together well as a team, higher morale is sure to follow.
