Boston Sports Teams Post Their Greatest Decade Ever
Let us not forget the decade that has given New England sports fans the greatest joy and pride we have ever known. The years from 2001-2011 have been the greatest in ourarea's history. Allow me to walk you through our greatest decade:
2001-2002: The Patriots, led by a young Rookie quarterback, Tom Brady, substituting for injured veteran, Drew Bledsoe (injured incidentally ina regular season game by a Jet), firmly took the reins, and with all the professionalism one would expect from a seasoned veteran, skillfully led our team to itsfirst superbowl in 15 years and its first victory in the history of the franchise. They did it at a time when ourCountry, still grieving from the attacks on September 11, needed a team dressed in Red, White, and Blue, named the Patriots, to win a victory for America. Chants of USA, USA, roared through the crowd. The troops in Afghanistan were watching, seeing it as a metaphor for the war they were fighting overseas.To get there,the Patriotshad to endure a horrendous blizzard game against the Oakland Raiders, and yes, when all seemed lost, Adam Vinitieri saved the day with a 45 yard field goal against the wind in ankle deep snow. The trash talking Steelers were next. They were bigger, rougher and tougher, or so they thought, but we beat them handily and left them with egg on their faces and a newfound respect for the former whipping boys of the AFC.Then the Superbowl. The big boys. The veteran team St. Louis Rams who would fight hard and lose by a field goal. The city does it up right with a rally at Government center and a Duck Boat Parade to mark the first ever Superbowl win of the New England Patriots. Remember....
2003-2004 Patriots: Again the Patriots bring us back to the Superbowl, this time against an expansion team, the Carolina Panthers. To get there, we had to defeat the great Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts. We would remain a thorn in their side for the rest of the decade. Another Duck Boat Parade. Remember...
2004 Red Sox: The fall classic. After 86 years, we finally defeat the Yankees.Led by a determinedand courageous pitcher named Curt Schilling,wefound ourselves in the world series against St. Louis. For all the Hype, it was almost a letdown. The Cardinals never showed up for the game. We won in 4 straight and, after all the excitement of the battle against the Yankees where we fought back from being down by 3 games,to comebackand win 4 straight seemed almost anti-climactic. Who will ever forget the names of Manny Ramirez, Jason Varitek, David Ortiz, Pedro Martinez, Derek Lowe, Keith Foulke, and Johnny Damon. The joy and sorrow of every Red Sox fan who ever lived was fulfilled that year. Every one of us thought of our deceased loved ones who never had a chance to see what we were witnessing that fall. The people of New England were standing tall, no longer the laughing stock of the football and baseball world. Get out the Duck boats and watch the biggest parade Boston has ever seen. Remember...
2004-2005 Patriots: Patriots go for the dynastic title by winning 3 Superbowls in 4 years. Again we had to go against Indianapolis and Peyton Manning to get there. This time we played the Philadelphia Eagles, and for the 3rd straight time won a Superbowl by just 3 points. Another Duck Boat Parade, the last as it would turn out for our Patriots. Remember...
2007 Red Sox: From the start, the Red Sox were in control leading their division all the way to the end. No Yankees this time, the road to the world series went through Cleveland. It was a nail biter and we were down 3 games to 1. But we took it to 7 games, and won in thefinal game.This time we were led by Josh Beckett, David Ortiz, Mike Lowell, Jonathan Papelbon, Jacob Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia. Then on to the World Series to defeat the Colorado Rockies. Unlike the Rams, the Rockies brought a better game with them, but it was not enough. Once again we win the World Series in 4 straight. 2007-2008 Patriots: The Patriots break all the records by posting a 16-0 regular season record. In the post-season, they defeated the Jaguars and the Chargers for an 18-game undefeated streak. But they failed to bring home the big one and lost to the NY Giants in the Superbowl. Much crying in Patriot nation. But the winning streak will not likely be broken.
2007-2008 Celtics: The Green is back against archrival LA Lakers to take the championship in 6 games. Their 17th Championship. A Return to the rafters. Bring on the Duck Boats. Remember....
2007-2008 Bruins: The bruins return to the Stanley Cup playoffs, beat their archrival, theHavs in a great series, but lose to the Penguins, thus ending their Stanley cup hopes.
2010-2011 Patriots: The season began with some serious doubts as to whether we would even have a winning season, yet Bill Belicheck made some (in our minds) radical and questionable changes and turned the team around for the best record in the NFL at 14-2. We failed to make it to the big game however, but we still had an enjoyable season.
In all, we posted 3 Superbowls, 2 World Series Championships, 1 NBA championship, 1 Perfect Season (Patriots), and more memorable moments in sports history than the mind can conceive; allin the last 10 years. The Patriots and Red Sox have posted so many records that will never be broken, that I can't possibly list them all here. So take heart fans, the Bruins and the Celtics are doing well, baseball has yet to begin and yes, the Patriots will be back. Looking forward to the next ten years.
