Botox delivers small diluted amounts of Clostridium botulinum through injection into

isolated muscle areas, causing the muscles to relax and weaken.

In the 1980s, the FDA issued their acceptance of Botox use from findings that it could halt conditions such as uncontrolled blinking and lazy eye. Doctors have used it for many years to treat wrinkles and facial lines. In 2002, Botox received approval from the FDA in treating moderate to more severe frown lines in between patients eyebrows. Botox is frequently applied to other facial sections as well.

How Botox Functions

Botox halts communication signals from being transmitted through nerves to the muscles which receive the injections. The muscle as a result, doesnt contract, making wrinkles soften and then show a reduction in their appearance.

This treatment is most frequently applied to lines on the forehead, those surrounding the eye area and those that resemble parentheses around the mouth. However, lines resulting from sun damage will not prove effective in treatments through Botox.

How Botox Is Performed

Treatments with Botox are provided in-office, taking a short time with no anesthesia needed. The Botox serum is injected into targeted muscles using a fine needle causing minimal discomfort. Its effects generally result following a range of 3 to 7 days and patients are advised to stay away alcohol for at least a week before treatment. Anti-inflammatory agents such as ibuprofen or aspirin should also not be taken two weeks prior to the procedure to reduce the risk of any bruising.

Longevity of Botox Injections

The results from Botox will continue for 4-6 months. As muscles gradually regain their activity though, lines and wrinkles show once again and will require touch ups. However, the wrinkles frequently look less harsh over time as muscles are retrained to not tense up as much.

Botoxs Side Effects

Short term bruising has been demonstrated to be the most frequent side effect resulting from Botox. Headaches may also be seen briefly but generally go away after a day or two. Some patients develop drooping of their eyelids, but this goes away within 21 days. Patients should refrain from rubbing the treated areas to keep the Botox from migrating, so one should refrain from rubbing the eye area for at least 12 hours following the injection and avoid laying down for about four hours.

Who is Not An Advisable Candidate?

Persons who are pregnant, have a neurological conditions, or those who are breastfeeding are not advised to undergo Botox treatment. A consultation with your doctor is advised before treatment as Botox wont treat all wrinkles.

Will Health Insurance Pay for Botox?

Botox is generally not approved by medical insurance when it is used for purely cosmetic reasons. Ask your insurance provider whether they will offer coverage for your treatment with Botox.
