Botox For Cervical Dystonia
Cervical Dystonia is a condition in which abnormal twisting or squeezing of the muscles in the neck and head can occur
. It is one of several types of movement disorders which affects at least 125,000 people in the United States alone. The movements are involuntary and can be extremely painful, while at the same time embarrassing for the person suffering from the condition. Cronic neck pain often results from Cervical Dystonia and the muscle contractions often worsen until they reach a plateau. As of yet a cure has not been found but a number of treatments are available, including Botox which has been proven to be rather effective at controlling the muscles.
Cervical dystonia can manifest itself in a number of ways but usually involve involuntary movements such as twisting of the head, repetitive movements, or abnormal posturing of the head. Theses involuntary muscle contractions can force the head to tilt forward which is called anterocollis, backward (retrocollis), or sideways (laterocollis). Most often people experience laterocollis, but in rarer cases anterocollis or retrocollis can occur, with anterocollis being the more difficult version to treat. The average age of onset is 41 and women are almost twice as likely to develop the condition than men. There is no known direct causes but it seems there are particular chromosomes which can be inherited that are known to have some connection to the condition.
Botox or botulinum toxin A seems like an unlikely treatment for cervical dystonia but the effects have been observed due to how Botox affects the body. It works by blocking nerve signals the brain is sending to muscles which are over-active or dis-functioning. Botox is not a permanent fix though as it needs to be done again every 3 months. However, the procedure is rather painless and fast, and some people have reported the Botox treatments aren't needed anymore after a certain point, as the body adapts to stay in the correct position, which is called remission and happens about 20% of the time. The Botox also seems to help with the pain as the muscles that are injected relax, which has helped quickly make it one of the top choices for cervical dystonia treatment.
Cervical dystonia can make it difficult for many people to live a normal life and things like getting dressed or driving are suddenly more complicated. Some people may require surgery if their case is serious and they don't respond to other treatments. For many people though, Botox and physical therapy has been a solid treatment plan to combat the cervical dystonia effectively. It isn't a sure-fire permanent fix but it does the job quite well for most people to live normally without the stresses and discomforts this condition can cause.
