Bottle Parts: The head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes of Bottles
I bet you never thought the song "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" could relate to plastic bottles. Well guess what? It does! Consumers should be aware that just like the body, each bottle has essential parts that assist it to function properly.
Starting at the top of the bottle, the first area is the orifice. The term is used loosely with throat, bore, mouth and opening. Have some fun, tell someone their orifice is open and watch their classic reaction. This is the main entrance of the bottle, where it is filled with and dispenses product.
The finish comes next. More of an assessment than an actual formation, the finish is a measurement of the bottle's neck. Each finish size and style has a specific number applied to it. For instance, our B116B has a 28-410 neck finish. What this number means is that the diameter of the neck is 28 millimeters and the 410 refers to the bottle's thread size. Bottles and closures must have the same neck finishes to fit securely.
Did you know that you and I both share a special feature with our B309B? Shoulders! All three of us have shoulders. After the orifice but before the body the bottle steadily widens and curves into a shoulder-like feature, that's the shoulder, hence the name.
The body is the largest portion of the bottle and the region of the container that most people are familiar with. This area holds and showcases the product. And for customers interested in packaging decoration, this is the ideal area for label panels.
The heel is the curved area of the container between the straight sides of the body and the flatness of the base. Here's another bottle-human commonality, if you have trouble remembering this part of the bottle you can always think of the heel of your foot!
The base is the part of the bottle that is rarely seen. Underneath all of the other elements, the base is key in maintaining the bottle's erect backbone.
That's it, you've learned all you need to know about bottle parts. Now that you know what you're looking for, browse our plastic bottle inventory. Just remember, only Fred sees blue hair balls. Orifice, finish, shoulder, body, heel and base. Get it? Make up your own if you want. Or better yet, out do "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" and write a bottle parts song!
