In about forty years, water has gone from being something people hardly thought about to something that people spend hundreds of dollars a year to purchase. Today, it is an important industryespecially in America.

According to the International Bottled Water Association (IBWA), consumers in the United States have consumed 9.1 billion gallons of bottled water in 2011. People drink more bottled water than any other drink. Soda pop, teas, coffee, and milk do not compare with it at all. According to Chris Hogan in the article, U.S. Consumption of Bottled Water Shows Significant Growth, Increasing 4.1 Percent in 2011, each American drinks about 29.2 gallons of bottled water a year.

People are drinking all this bottled water for a variety of reasons. For one, bottled water is very convenient. It is easy to have a dozen bottles of water cooling off in the refrigerator waiting for a person whenever he needs it. People can carry it with them in the car and put it in their childs lunch box. Having it nearby can help a person feel prepared for whatever he might find himself doing.

Another reason people like bottled water is because it safe to drink. Whether a person is travelling to another country or just living somewhere where the water occasionally gets polluted, having bottled water can give people the peace of mind that what they is drinking is safe to drink. During disasters and other frightening circumstances, bottled water can help people rest secured knowing that they do not have to fear what is in the water.

Bottled water is also uniform in flavor. Going from town to town or restaurant to restaurant, the water can taste different. There is city water and well water. Bottled water is nice because a person knows what it will taste like no matter where she purchases it.

Many companies bottle and sell bottled water. Aquafina , Dasani , Arrowhead Mountain Spring Water, and Iceland Spring Water are just a few of the name brand types of bottled water. Generic bottled water is also available. With so many people wanting to purchase it, it comes as no surprise that everyone seems to carry it.

Bottled water is a popular phenomenon and continues to be a growing business. People like it because of the convenience, the safety, and the familiarity of it. Many different companies exist that produce it. It has become an important part of American culture.
