Brainwave Entrainment Music: Tapping the Power of Lower Brainwaves
Music to Entrain Your Brain
Brainwave entrainment music is a wonderful way of exploring the depth of our mind. We normally live in the realm of the beta brainwaves (13 40 Hz) and hardly ever explore regions of the lower frequency brainwaves. It is in the low frequency regions of alpha, theta, or delta brainwaves that we have a lot of hidden potential that mostly remains untapped.
For example, alpha waves (7 13 Hz) occur in relaxed states such as meditation or hypnosis. Alpha brainwaves generate feelings of well-being and focus. People with no or low levels of alpha waves are more stress prone than others.
Brainwaves of Distress: High Frequency Beta Waves
Brainwave pattern of the normal working brain falls in the beta frequency range, 13 40 Hz. The conscious mind is responsible for all of the thinking, analyzing, responding, and worrying while dealing with the outside world. Whenever it experiences negative emotions like anxiety, panic, or fear the brainwaves shift towards the high frequency side of the beta state. The endless mental chattering (many people call it inner voice) that goes on in the mind keeps us confined within a rather limited understanding of reality.
If the brainwaves are made to shift towards lower frequencies, the high level of thinking activity of the brain subsides. When the chattering of the conscious mind is silenced, mental states of relaxation and calm are reached and the creativity and insights from the subconscious mind begins to surface.
The Left and The Right Brain Hemispheres
The cerebral cortex of the brain is divided into two parts, the left hemisphere and right hemisphere. These hemispheres are connected by the corpus callosum. As is well known, the left hemisphere deals with reason, logic, and verbal response. The right one is responsible for emotions and creative work.
Most people primarily use the left hemisphere, except when depressed when the right side gets busier. This imbalance results in little communication between the two brain hemispheres. If the two hemispheres work separately, they may cope with stressful experiences differently.
This creates an internal conflict due to different interpretations of the left and right brain hemispheres. It results in increased anxiety in response to a stressful situation. Without proper communication between the two hemispheres, the conflict may never be resolved and the issue or conflict may become further suppressed.
Benefits of Hemispheric Synchronization
When there is improved communication between the hemispheres, an individual is better able to cope with stressful situations, because the brain functions more efficiently and resourcefully. There is an increased synchronization between the two hemispheres of the brain at lower brainwave frequencies. This creates conditions of deep relaxation and highly focused concentration In fact, hemispheric synchronization has long been associated with meditative states. Since thinking has almost ceased, sudden flashes of inspiration and creativity begin to surface.
When both sides work at similar levels, the person is generally happy, successful, and optimistic. People who meditate, pray, are spiritually inclined, or are contented normally have both their hemispheres working in harmony. We may say that their brain is synchronized.
Brainwave entrainment has been shown to improve communication between the left and right sides by stimulating the growth of additional neural pathways between the two hemispheres. This offers a wonderful way of tapping the latent brain potential.
