You want to ensure you do not confuse the brake fluid reservoir with something else. Markings on the reservoir will show a maximum level marking and a minimum level marking.

On newer vehicles, the reservoir can be clear, negating the requirement to open it to gauge the level of fluid. If not, you will need to remove the cap to ascertain the level of fluid. Once you have the cap removed, check to see how low the fluid is and top it up if needed to the full line. It is also important to make sure you use the correct fluid designed for your vehicle, so consult your owner's manual to get the specifics.

Next, make a thorough inspection of the components that complete your braking system. At this point, you are searching for excessive wear and tear to the braking system. If you locate something of concern, but are not confident in your assessment, take notes and pictures to consult with a manual or a mechanic.
