Brake Maintenance Should Top Your List
The most important component on a vehicle that cannot be overemphasized is the braking system
. A driver relies on the brakes more than any other function of a vehicle throughout the course of a commute whether a short trip to the grocery store or a trip crossing the country on a family vacation. Many drivers never give it a thought, but how would your react if suddenly your brakes stopped working on a descent down a treacherous mountain path? What a time to be thinking, "I should have checked my brakes!"
Brakes require maintenance as much as any other part of the vehicle, perhaps even more so. Routines checks of the proper workings of the brake system and topping off brake fluid should be routine like washing the exterior of the vehicle. Most drivers will readily admit they neglect to check their brake fluid on a consistent basis. This is where you should start.
Locate the brake fluid reservoir by consulting your owners manual if you are not mechanically inclined. Keep in mind that on most vehicles the reservoir is clearly marked. You want to ensure you do not confuse the brake fluid reservoir with something else. Markings on the reservoir will show a maximum level marking and a minimum level marking.
On newer vehicles, the reservoir can be clear, negating the requirement to open it to gauge the level of fluid. If not, you will need to remove the cap to ascertain the level of fluid. Once you have the cap removed, check to see how low the fluid is and top it up if needed to the full line. It is also important to make sure you use the correct fluid designed for your vehicle, so consult your owner's manual to get the specifics.
Next, make a thorough inspection of the components that complete your braking system. At this point, you are searching for excessive wear and tear to the braking system. If you locate something of concern, but are not confident in your assessment, take notes and pictures to consult with a manual or a mechanic. Every now and them, your brake pads need servicing as well.
Brake pads tend to wear more so than any other part of the braking system so make you are inspecting them often. When you are driving your vehicle, pay special attention to how your brakes react. Be alert for squealing and sticking, and if you notice your brakes performing in such a manner, keep in mind the situation will not simply fix itself. Brake have the tendency to squeal when they are wet or when they are cold however, if the sound is consistent you need to visit your mechanic immediately.
Your owner's manual is a great source to read up on how often your brakes need servicing. You will want to seek the assistance of someone certified to change brake fluids, pads and all other maintenance to the braking system. Most regular folks lack the skills necessary to maintain or repair them yourself. We can overemphasize that your brakes work overtime each time you drive your vehicle and in nasty weather.
They tend to work triple shifts on a regular basis to keep you and your family safe. Checking the brake fluid is straightforward, but the rest of the braking system needs require checking by a professional at least annually. You have nothing to lose, but everything to gain, including extending the vehicles longevity and the safety of yourself and your passengers. For these reasons alone, we cannot overemphasize the importance of your vehicles braking system.
