When your car cruises down the road at top speed it has a lot of kinetic energy

. This kinetic energy is so much that unless it is reduced in a controlled manner it can smash the car up completely. If you have ever seen a car crash test video you will have some idea of the immense amount of energy that a moving car posses. Now that should make you wonder that when you apply the brakes where does all that energy go? After all you can slow down and even stop the car with your brakes and the car doesn't even get a scratch leave alone getting smashed up.

The answer is that the energy gets released as heat in the braking components of your car. And you can imagine that a lot of heat will be created and that needs to be managed properly. Now you know that brake pads are used to stop the car and they tend to get worn out after a while. But brake pads are flat surfaces and if they get hot there is not place for the heat to escape. So how does the heat get released? Well the brake pads are only one half of the braking component. After all the brake pad must rub against something to make the car stop. And that something are brake rotors.

And it is the brake rotors that have a feature that allows the heat to escape. This feature is either a hole or a slot through which the heat, gases and even water can escape when the brakes are applied. Water is present around the brakes when you are driving in wet conditions. The drilled brake rotors have holes to allow the heat to escape. Whereas the slotted brake rotors have slots to allow the heat to escape. The drilled brake rotors have lesser surface area but are adequate for everyday driving. Slotted brake rotors have more surface area and are good for high performance cars which need top braking performance.
