Branding is a word with several meanings. Its older definition is derived from the Old Norse word "brandr", which means to burn. In marketing and advertising, the definition is similar. It means marking an identity onto products or services.

A brand identity is precious commodity in today's over-advertised world. People encounter a form of advertising every second, wherever they are. It can be a billboard, a radio ad, some form of guerilla advertising, or a man in sandwich boards promoting a local barbershop. Having a specific identity for your brand helps you stand out from this cacophony of images and sounds. If a person only sees a second of your TV commercial, or glances at your magazine ad, they will know immediately that it's yours.

Most people believe that only big corporations should do branding. They are the ones who have the budget, the massive marketing team, and the global economy to invest in. That is not the case. Even small to mid scale companies should invest in a brand identity, because a unique identity is priceless in a global economy.


Building a brand identity goes beyond simply creating a logo and using it on all advertising and marketing materials. It is about creating a unique product benefit or targeting a specific consumer need. Even if your product is not particularly different from the competitor's, by creating a unique identity, you can create a market that's entirely yours.

A good example of unique identities would be competing soda brands Coke and Pepsi. Both products are essentially the same thing, with minor differences in taste. However, because their brand identities are such strong opposites, they have created huge markets of their own. Coke is seen as the mainstream, the family brand, and more subdued. Pepsi is the alternative, with a younger style, a little outside the mainstream and more edgy.

A brand identity is like a personal identity. It has to do with a certain way of looking and sounding. It also has to do with knowing whom your customers are and what they want to hear. But while most people can have more than one mood or style of dress, a brand should have only one. This makes it easier to identify the brand from others.

Apple is one brand that has mastered its identity. From its Think Different mantra, to the clean look of its advertisements and stores, it has a definite identity that is immediately recognizable.

Mid-level online marketers can particularly benefit from branding campaigns. They can make it easier for their loyal consumers to find them, as well as attract new customers with their unique identity. A generic ad for laundry detergent can tell you that you need to buy more detergent. A brand campaign for an eco-friendly detergent tells you that you can buy a product that cleans clothes without being harmful to the environment.

How can you create a brand identity without spending too much money? Multinational corporations spend billions of dollars just for branding, and even employ brand management agencies.


The answer is easy. Cut out the middleman (branding agencies) and do it yourself. Most people would think that's hard, but there are several services that make advertising online easy.

One of the most commonly used services is Google Adwords, because it lets you target specific people and set a budget. But why stick to just copy text that appears in Google search results, when you can advertise in video streams?

Video streams already have a specific, captive audience. These people go online specifically to see video content, which makes them more receptive to seeing video ads. There are also several ad exchange platforms that make advertising in video streams as easy as Google Adwords.

An example of such a service is ADEX. They let you create pre-roll, mid-roll, post-roll or overlay ads. You can also streamline the audience that sees your ad by choosing the ad topic and the region where your ad will be seen.
