new stars to emerge in the 1990s, Brandy Norwood has truly seen what stardom can mean. Starting off with humble beginnings as part of the church choir to becoming a celebrated actress and the most successful female music artist in America, her success story is unparalleled.
Born in McComb, MO, in 1979, Brandy Norwood was raised in California, where she was schooled at the Hollywood High Performing Arts Center. From the tender age of seven she was completely gripped by the musical genius of Whitney Houston and began nurturing a dream of becoming a singer. But things were not going to be all that easy. At school, she did not receive any support at all from her teachers and was unable to persuade them to send her on auditions. However she remained undaunted from these initial obstacles and began entering talent shows on her own. By the time she was eleven, she was already part of a youth singing group and had performed at several public functions.
From there she moved on to a series of television award shows and specials, and later co-starred in the short-lived ABC sitcom Thea. This marked the beginning of her acting career which later expanded to include popular sitcoms like Moesha, movies like Cinderella, set it off and I still know what you did last summer. And before she knew it she had become a super star across media platforms!
Brandy's self-titled debut LP appeared in 1994, included a series of hits, among them "I Wanna Be Down," "Baby," and "Brokenhearted". By now she had become a major star and Brandy pictures and songs were the biggest craze amongst the teens of that time. She returned about a year later with the blockbuster "Sittin' Up in My Room," a cut from the soundtrack to the film Waiting to Exhale. This marked the beginning of a musical career that created history.
Her song "The Boy Is Mine", a duet with singer Monica became the first of the many Grammies that she has won in her career. Her second album Never Say Never and her later successful records established her as one of the most successful of the new breed of urban R&B female vocalists to emerge during the mid-to late 1990s. She has also become a famous and famed artist till then.
Brandy has sold over 15 million copies of her five studio albums in the United States and over 50 million records worldwide, to date. For this feat, the RIAA ranks Norwood as one of the best-selling female artists in American music history. Additionally, she has won over 100 awards as a recording artist for the Brandy music video of her songs. She also features of Billboards list of the top 50 R&B and Hip Hop Artists list of the past 25 years. The term redefining success gets a whole new meaning when it comes to the career of Brandy Norwood!
