Choosing a Chiropractor:

The best source is often a referral from a relative or friend who has had good experiences with a doctor. Referral from another health care practitioner is also generally helpful. Just as you wouldn't continue to see a medical doctor who refused to refer you to a good chiropractor for problems with your musculoskeletal system, you should also refrain from selecting a chiropractic doctor who refuses to send you to an MD when necessary.

Exercise caution however, because one person's definition of a good chiropractor may be quite different from another person's definition. In general, if multiple resources recommend the same chiropractor, chances are good that the chiropractor is reliable.

Find a doctor who will work with you in detecting the source of your problem and planning a course of care. The doctor should listen to you and make the appropriate referral if unable to help you.

Chiropractic Degrees and Education:

Chiropractors must complete a minimum of six or seven years of college and post-graduate study to earn their degrees, Doctor of Chiropractic (DC). Their education includes at least 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory and clinical experience, and as much and sometimes more than course work in anatomy and physiology as most medical doctors. After they receive their degrees from one of the nations 17 accredited chiropractic colleges, they have to pass rigorous exams and be licensed by the state before they can open a practice. The practice of chiropractic is licensed in all 50 states.

The first step is to ensure that your DC graduated from a school accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE). The CCE (www.cce-usa.org) is the national agency that accredits chiropractic colleges in the United States. It is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Second, make sure that the chiropractor that you've selected is licensed in your particular state. (To find your state's licensing board, go to www.fclb.org.) You can also contact the state board of chiropractic examiners to see if any sanctions have been placed on your doctor for state law violations. Also, be sure that your chiropractor is a member of the American Chiropractic Association.

What To Ask On Your First Visit:

1. "Do you use any type of objective means to assess the health of the nervous system?" This is a very critical component of your initial evaluation, as well as for the regular check-ups during your course of care.

2. "Do you offer free consultations?" There's no way a doctor should expect a patient to choose him or her without first visiting the office to see if the office, staff and doctor is for them.

3. "Will you show me ways of preventing what you are treating?" You'll be thrilled to find out how quick and easy it is to prevent your pain from coming back without drugs or surgery. This prolongs the benefits of the care you've received; and helps prevent you from re-injuring yourself.

4. "Do you take x-rays when necessary?" Be sure to seek a chiropractor who takes x-rays to rule out fracture or a gross pathology (English translation - some other serious problem) as indicated by the consultation, health history and exam.

5. "Can you furnish me with references?" Ask for five references. Three of these references should be current patients, and the other two should be other health care professionals like a medical doctor, a dentist, an optometrist, etc.

6. "Do you have payment plans available?" Successful practices usually allow patients to make payments.

What Are The Benefits of Chiropractic Care?

Research shows that proper maintenance of your musculoskeletal system is important to your health. We suspect that pain in the joints caused by a reduction of normal joint motion is a common reason for many nonsurgical musculoskeletal problems. Most chiropractors address these problems with spinal manipulation, exercise, and other types of active treatment.

A reputable doctor of chiropractic will teach you how to maintain your musculoskeletal system through exercise, good posture, and good lifting techniques. He or she will also describe good health habits, such as the elements of a healthy diet. Your doctor of chiropractic will focus on helping you prevent future episodes of pain and disability, rather than suggesting that periodic, ongoing adjustment of your spine alone will solve your health problems. A good chiropractor will evaluate your condition and inform you of your progress at each visit.

What To Avoid in a Chiropractor?

Avoid chiropractors who advertise about "danger signals that indicate the need for chiropractic care," make claims about curing diseases, try to get patients to sign contracts for lengthy treatment, use scare tactics, or disparage scientific medical treatment or preventive measures such as immunization or fluoridation.

Avoid chiropractors who purport to diagnose or treat subluxations - when one or more of the bones of your spine (vertebrae) move out of position and create pressure on or irritate spinal nerves - who have waiting room literature promoting "nerve interference" as an underlying cause of disease, or who post charts or distribute literature suggesting that chiropractic might help nearly every type of health problem.

Avoid any chiropractor who routinely performs or orders x-ray examinations of all patients. Most patients who consult a chiropractor do not need them. Be especially wary of full-spine x-ray examinations. This practice has doubtful diagnostic value and involves a large amount of radiation.
