Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Wareham Massachusetts - Shoulder Down Guard Pass
This week in his MMA Performance Professor Series, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt, Muay Thai and Mixed Martial Arts trainer Stephen Whittier of Nexus Martial Arts & Fitness in Wareham, MA breaks down a shoulder down variation of the classic "bullfighter" guard pass in BJJ when an opponent counters the standard version.
The most important principle with guard passing is making sure that you have correct posture and grips, and prevent your opponent from controlling inside your "borders" (imagine a 3-dimensional strike zone) with his grips, feet, or legs. Professor Whittier begins by demonstrating the importance of how to maintain proper posture and base, explaining 1) how to maintain superior position by squatting or lowering your base instead of leaving your hip back, and 2) how to dominate the grip game and zone out your opponent's attempts to pummel his legs inside your arms, legs or hips.
From here, he points out, the pressure you put on your opponent will open up the avenues and opportunities for your passes. In this case, he breaks into the classic toreando, or "bullfighter" guard pass.
If your opponent does not, or is not able to counter you before you complete the pass, you can simply angle his legs away from you as you step around his legs to side control or knee ride (aka knee on stomach) position. However, an active opponent is likely to escape his hips away from you early in your pass, get onto his side and frame away on your body with his arms in an attempt to create enough space to regain his guard.
If this happens, Professor Whittier shows how to change your angle so that you are facing your opponent's legs, and drop your shoulder into your opponent's lower abdomen, using your body to separate your opponents chest from his legs and to use your weight to control his hips.
Keys:
- Be sure not to rest your legs on the mat, this will cause your weight to transfer to the mat instead of into your opponent and lose control, allowing him to easily escape.
- Maintain your original grips inside each of your opponent's lower pant legs the entire time as you transition into this position.
Once you have controlled your opponent and has your weight driving in off the balls of your feet into your shoulder (your opponent's hips), use your grips on his legs to drive his knees away from you, rolling him onto his back and then bringing your knee into his near-side hip as you square back into him. From here, immediately take your hand from his far leg and bring that arm to hug his far hip, effectively sandwiching his hips with your arm on the far side and your knee on the near side.
To complete the pass, keep your hips low as you swim your arm closest to the head up into a crossface or papercutter position to attach to his upper body, then slide your chest up and onto his chest to dominant position in side control.
