Breaking First Aid Myths

While we've discussed on here about the public not having a basic understanding of first aid

, what about making a misunderstanding of it? A recent article discusses various myths of first aid. For a condensed version, here are some points for you to think about when present in a situation in which first aid is required:

The ambulance will be there in a minute. Usually, the ambulance takes eight minutes to arrive. Sometimes this may be longer, however, and even at eight minutes, you have enough time to start with basic first aid skills.

It's better to d o nothing than to make the situation worse. This calls for examining the situation. Is the victim bleeding or choking? Not tending to either of these instantly could result in shock or death.

For nose bleeds, tilt the head back. In fact, this may result in nausea and vomiting.

A victim should lie down during a heart attack. Instead, a half sitting position is better, as fully lying down makes breathing more difficult.

Tourniquets should be used when a limb is injured. Using a tourniquet, in actuality, may cut off the blood flow and result in the limb needing to be amputated.

Never move a victim after a traffic injury.

If a child drinks bleach, he or she should vomit. Instead, the bleach going up the esophagus could cause more problems. Instead, have a child sip on milk if his or her lips are burned.

Put your fingers in the throat when a victim is choking. This, however, may push the object down even further and rest in more choking.

When a person is having a seizure, a hard object should be placed in his or her mouth. This may damage the victim's teeth or, worse, may break and cause a choking hazard.

If someone feels faint, they should place their head between their knees. This, however, may make the person fall forward.
