Breast Augmentation: Know What To Expect

Breast augmentation is being chosen by women all across the world as a means to enhance

their profile and improve the appearance of breasts that show signs of aging or have changed due to child birth. In fact, the procedure is now one of the most common in the wide world of plastic surgery.

The procedure is performed by inserting an implant above the breast muscle or behind breast tissue and can be placed in a variety of positions through different incision locations. The goal here is to leave the new breasts looking as natural as possible, while enhancing the size as desired.

It is not uncommon for plastic surgeons to recommend that a breast augmentation be performed in conjunction with a breast lift. A breast lift is typically recommended in order to treat the appearance of drooping or sagging that can occur naturally. Laser bra breast surgery is a newer technique used as well, implementing a laser to provide more support for the breast itself.

When considering your options, it's always a good idea to set off a consultation with a surgeon you can trust. Ask around and see what experiences friends and family have had. Do a little research and save yourself the hassle of dealing with multiple appointments and consultations if you can.

Once a surgeon has been picked, the both of you should make a decision regarding the type of implant, placement, and the incision locations. Anatomy tends to play a major role in these decisions as what may work for one person may not suit another.

The augmentation is usually performed in an outpatient center or an office surgical suite using local anesthesia. Most surgeries typically last one to three hours depending on the exact procedure.

Once you're underway, an incision is made in one of four locations:

Under the breast

The navel area

Around the nipple

In the armpit

The implant is then inserted accordingly.

Post operation, the breasts will be bruised, sore, and swollen. Patients should expect to wear a surgical bra for several days following. Moderate pain is normal and should be treated via prescription from your doctor. Support bras are also a common recommendation until the swelling has subsided.

Avoid heavy lifting for at least a few weeks as straining the muscles can cause the breasts to swell and increase pressure. Many people return to work within a week or so... full activity within 3 - 4.

Above all, it's important that you make sure you're confident in your decision prior to the operation. Do the research and prepare yourself. The more you know, the less chance there is of being surprised.
