Many women are stopped short when they are asked a simple question about their upcoming breast augmentation

. The question is: What size will you choose? Surprisingly, many women don't put a lot of thought into this beforehand. They may know they want to go bigger, but that doesn't mean they've put a specific number on it. It's really not that surprising, when you really think about it. There are a lot of factors that go into such a choice. Shape and proportion have to figure in to any calculations.

In any operation of this type, the paramount concern is not to have regrets later on. For many women, surprisingly, this means going bigger than they might have planned. The most common regret following breast augmentation is women wishing they had chosen a bigger size from the start. This conflicts with the general wisdom that you shouldn't go too big because of proportion concerns. Now while it is true that going too big can give you a myriad of problems (back trouble, looking inappropriate in most clothing), many women aren't sure what "too big" really means. It depends a great deal on your body type, how much weight you're carrying, and how confident you are. It is also true (socially speaking) that younger women can often get away with a larger size than an older woman. Of course, when you take that into account, you have to also take into account that implants don't get smaller as time goes on.

There are, of course, concerns about size that can only be addressed by a professional. Any good plastic surgeon should be able to give you a recommendation as far as desired cup size. These recommendations will be based on a host of criteria that won't be available to the average layman. This includes such nuances as the shape of the rib cage and the structure of the collar bone. It will also include an examination of the skin and the current capacity of the tissue. These are valid concerns because they can greatly affect the way the implants look after the procedure. If you've ever seen implants that look as though they are getting ready to burst free of the skin, you're likely seeing what happens when a patient ignores their doctor's concerns.

When it comes down to it, almost every factor involved in a breast augmentation procedure is ultimately determined by the patient. This is why it is vital to do your research before going in, choose a doctor who is willing to work with you, and make a decision that you can live with following the surgery.
