Breast Augmentation - What To Do And What Not To Do
Breast augmentation is an extremely popular form of elective cosmetic surgery
. Women around the world are choosing to enhance their self-esteem through their physical shape and have decided that one thing that needs improving is their breast size and shape. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when contemplating this type of surgery and the risks or complications associated with it. This article outlines a few of the known (and not-so-known) Do and Don't guidelines that will help you determine whether breast augmentation is right for you and how to maximize results while minimizing painful recovery time.
Do: Find a surgeon you can trust. This is perhaps one of the most important things you can do and will go a long way to ensuring you are happy with the results of your breast augmentation surgery for years go come. Many of the risks and side effects associated with this type of procedure can be dramatically reduced by selecting a surgeon that is board-certified in plastic surgery and has extensive experience in implant placement.
Don't: Make the decision to have the operation to please someone else. Enhancing the size of your chest should be a personal decision made by a woman with healthy self-esteem. Choosing to augment your breast size to please a partner is not necessarily wise and may be downright harmful for your relationship. Put yourself first and decide what is best for you.
Do: Quit smoking. Cigarette smoking constricts blood flow and significantly hinders the delivery of oxygen and other healing materials from reaching the incision site. In turn, this can cause delayed healing or even separation of the wound edges which can result in ugly scarring or infection. Ideally, you should quit smoking period. But if the thought of that sounds like nails across a blackboard, at least consider quitting smoking for two weeks before and after surgery.
Don't: Ignore early signs of infection. While a moderate amount of redness, mild pain, or slight inflammation is normal, an increase in any of these signs during the early post-operative period may be warning signs of infection. Be sure to tell your doctor so they can start a course of antibiotics.
Do: Follow other pre- and post-operative instructions closely. Your physician will give you a list of instructions to maximize surgical results and minimize downtime. Be sure to ask any questions you may have and follow their advice closely.
Don't: Engage in vigorous exercise or sexual activity for at least 6 weeks. While implant materials and casings have come a long way in a short time, there is still a slight risk of leakage or rupture. This is especially true during the recovery period as the tissue around the implant heals. Take a little time off from vigorous sexual activity or those long hard workouts at the gym. Your body will thank you for it!
Do: Enjoy your new figure!
