Breast Augmentations: A Basic Overview
Breast augmentations are a series of various treatment options for patients who are unhappy with the appearance and size of their breasts
. Almost any relatively healthy patient who is considering one of these procedures can be considered a candidate. However the best candidates are ones who are healthy, non smoking, and are at, or at least near their ideal weight. In this article we will outline these procedures to help provide a better understanding of this popular cosmetic treatment.
Risks and Complications
While in this day and age complications are fairly scarce, the most common risks include excessive bleeding, bruising, infection, tissue death, loss or increase of sensation, implant rupture, asymmetry, and capsular contracture (the hardening of the breast caused by the formation of scar tissue).
Surgeries involving the use of tear-drop shaped implants hold a higher risk of malrotation of the implant, causing the implant to appear misshapen. In addition, the presence of an implant can cause the detection of abnormal breast tissue that much harder.
Recovery
Due to the fact that there are several options pertaining to incision and implant placement, recovery time tends to vary greatly. However, as a general rule, patients will need at least 2 days of rest following the operation. In addition, patients are recommended to abstain from strenuous activities for a period of no less than two weeks. Most patients are able to return to work within the first week, however swelling and soreness may persist for 3-4 weeks afterward.
Types of Implants:
Texture: Some may have a rougher, textured surface while others can be a bit smoother. While the textured implants are thought to reduce the risk of capsular contracture, they are generally considered much harder to remove.
Shape: Implants can be round of tear-drop in shape. Though many individuals tend to prefer the natural look of the anatomical tear-drop shape, there is an increased risk of malrotation associated with them.
Composition: In general, silicone implants are thought to feel more natural, however, many patients still opt for the saline type due to the safety concerns regarding silicone.
