Breast Implants: Making An Informed Decision
Big breasts are everywhere! Movies, TV, and glossies are full of women who seem to have that perfect pair of breasts
. If this has led you to consider going under the knife for a breast augmentation surgery (aka, boob job, breast implants), here's some information to help you decide if breast implants are right for you.
Breast augmentation procedure
Breast implants are among the most common cosmetic procedures in the world but it is a complex procedure nonetheless. You will be anaesthetised and the surgeon will make an incision either under your arm, along the underside of the breasts, or around the nipple to insert implants made of either silicone gel or saline. The incision will be closed and temporary drains will be placed to prevent fluid accumulation. After surgery, you'll experience pain and swelling and you'll be asked to wear a surgical bra. Scarring will occur but it will fade over time. You might be required to stay overnight at the hospital and you'll need to schedule follow-up appointments with your surgeon.
Breast implant longevity
Since they have silicone or saline fillers, breast implants can leak or get damaged at any time and need to be replaced surgically. Some breast implants break within a few weeks while others last for years. Implants can last about 10 years on average but need to be regularly checked by your doctor.
Breast implant safety
While complications might arise, medical studies have established that breast implants are reasonably safe. However, they are not safe for everyone and so you should reveal your complete medical history to your doctor. The surgeon will evaluate whether you are a good candidate for implants, what type of implant is ideal for you and will also help you determine your ideal breast size.
Breast implant complications
Getting breast implants can have very serious risks and side effects. Your implants could rupture due to natural wear and tear or injury. You could develop toxic shock syndrome or an infection due to contaminated implants. Some women get hematomas (blood/fluid accumulation) following surgery while others report numbness or hypersensitivity. Many of these complications are painful and can last for years, if not forever.
Even the most skilled plastic surgeon cannot guarantee post-operative perfection and so stretch marks, lack of symmetry and even rippling are quite common. These are just some of the risks associated with getting breast implants. Your doctor should explain all related risks and side effects in a detailed manner. As with all medical procedures, your surgeon's advice is extremely important and will patiently answer all your questions regarding breast implants. If you choose to get implants, choose an experienced surgeon and follow their instructions very carefully.
