Breast Prosthesis Basics
Having to undergo a mastectomy is a major trauma for most women. First they deal with the cancer diagnosis, and then the realization that their bodies will be permanently altered - and for many, these two situations will happen quickly. If you find yourself diagnosed with breast cancer and face a mastectomy, you will not only have to take in the serious health implications, but also think about how you will look once the surgery is complete. One of the first things that you will need to consider post surgery is how you will choose to live with the difference created in your body shape. That's where breast prosthesis come in.
Whether you have had a full or partial mastectomy there is a breast prosthesis that will help you regain your outward shape. They come in a variety of materials, but for the first 6-8 weeks after surgery you will probably recommended to use fibre filled prosthesis. Once the sensitivity from surgery, and any after treatment, has gone then you can explore other types of prosthesis such as silicone.
From temporary to permanent
Once you are ready for a more permanent prosthesis you will need to choose the type that fits your lifestyle best, and then be measured so that it fits perfectly. If you had time prior to surgery to look at the various options available, you will know what you want. If you didn't, then the nursing staff at your hospital should be able to help you decide what's best for you. It could be that you want a prosthesis that fits inside a special pocket on a bra, or alternatively you may prefer to have one that sticks directly to your skin. Whatever you choose, it's important that the fitting is done by a breast care specialist so that your outward appearance looks balanced. Take a couple of your favourite style tops with you to the fitting and see how the different types of prosthesis look under them.
Once you get your made to measure prosthesis, you need to avoid back and shoulder injury due to posture issues that can be caused by an ill-fitting prosthesis. Even though you had a professional fitting, make sure that you go back to the clinic if you feel your balance isn't right. Ignoring this could result in you having other health problems caused by a bad posture due to an ill-fitting posthetic!
Another option to reconstructive surgery
Although reconstructive breast surgery is an option, it isn't for everyone. Having already gone through the trauma of a mastectomy many women opt to use a prosthetic breast and consequently over recent years the styles and variety of bras to wear with the prosthetics have improved dramatically. At first the mastectomy may leave you feeling that you don't want to wear a bra because of the constrictive feeling it gives. An alternative could be a good LycraT sports bra, or supportive camisole. Your care nurse should be able to help with recommendations, and help you make appropriate choices.
