Breast cancer can have an immense impact on the lives
of
women, especially when they have to undergo Mastectomy. They face both
physical and mental trauma after the surgery. However, now this can be
overcome by undergoing DIEP
flap breast reconstruction. It is an effective surgical
procedure which has already gained popularity due to its multifarious
benefits.
DIEP FLAP Technique – Recreates a Seemingly Natural
Breast
Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator (DIEP), also known as ‘free
flap’ is the autologous tissue taken from the patient’s abdominal region
for breast reconstruction. It consists of the skin, the fat layers,
deep inferior epigastric artery and vein along with its perforators. Plastic surgeons
remove the flap and introduce it to the region of the chest where the
breast is supposed to be located. To ensure proper blood supply to the
breast, the inferior epigastric blood vessels are connected to those in
the chest using a microscope.
The abdominal area from where the flap
was harvested is sutured. Signs of surgical intervention in this region
don’t remain prominent as the incisions are made between the folds.
After the breast
reconstruction surgery, the plastic surgeon would augment the
nipple and tattoo the region to create the areola.

Proficient Plastic Surgeon
A Must for Successful Surgery
Though DIEP
flap breast reconstruction is an effective surgical procedure,
not all plastic surgeons may have the required expertise to perform the
surgery. But there are quite a few experienced surgeons proficient in
the new technique. It is best that one makes the most out of the
consultation by asking questions regarding the procedure. It is also
important to check out the plastic surgeon’s credentials and experience
to ensure that you are entrusting yourself to a reliable surgeon.
