Breast Reduction Surgery: What Are The Health Benefits
A breast reduction surgery is the procedure performed in order to reduce the size of excessively large and heavy breasts
. Not only does this improve the proportion of a woman's body, but it can alleviate an array of health problems, as well.
Women who have extremely large and heavy bosoms often end up with pain in their necks, shoulders and backs, especially in the upper back region. Bra straps can dig into the shoulders and leave abrasions, rashes and even cause permanent grooved indentations. Arthritis has also been shown to develop because of the strain put on this area.
There are also emotional issues associated with huge bosoms. Teasing and ogling can cause embarrassment. It is also frustrating to not be able to find proper fitting clothing or to be able to participate in certain athletic activities due to this condition.
Because there are so many health problems associated with excessively large breasts, many health insurance plans will pay for the surgery. This is not considered merely a cosmetic surgery, but rather one that will alleviate current problems as well as those down the road.
The surgical procedure usually requires a one night stay in a hospital. General anesthesia is the most common anesthetic choice and the procedure is usually completed within three hours. The operation entails the removal of tissue and skin and the repositioning of the nipple and areola into a central location. Liposuction, which is the suctioning of adipose tissue by means of a medical device called a cannula, is often performed around the area, especially in the armpit region. Excess bodily fluids will be collected with a special drainage tube. This drain will most likely need to remain in place for a few weeks.
There will be some initial pain but it should be fairly easily managed with pain medication. There will also be some swelling and bruising which should successfully recede within six weeks. The scars are usually hidden to the highest degree possible and slowly fade.
By the end of six weeks, the result should be healed and looking great. Most women love the outcome. Not only can they now buy clothes more easily, but they can go jogging, dancing and even jump rope without pain. The results are permanent as long as there is no weight gain or pregnancy. It is reported that most women only wish they'd decided to have the surgery even sooner. If this is something that you're interested in, it would be wise to make an appointment with a cosmetic surgeon to discuss whether this is a viable option for you.
