Breast Surgery: A Brief History Of The Practice
Whether you are thinking about getting breast implants
, a reduction, or reconstruction, you probably want to know as much as possible about the procedure. This might include the history of the practice. One aspect that you might find interesting to begin with is that breast surgery has been around for more than one hundred years, allowing plenty of time to make great strides.
Around 1890, the first implants were created out of unlikely materials. The first kinds involved injections of paraffin, which eventually led to infections and even lumps in the area. This unfortunate material was no longer in use by 1920, but instead, other odds and ends were tried out. They included a polyurethane sponge, ox cartilage, and even rubber ground into bits.
When these did not work so well, fat transplants using flab from the stomach and buttocks were tried out, but the fat often was reabsorbed into the body so the results were rarely good.
After most of these types of breast surgery did not have the best results, the silicone implant was created in 1960. However, in the early 1980s it was discovered that it could result in hardened breasts and even inflammation.
Once silicone types were withdrawn from the market, the saline kind became popular in the early 1990s. Some with soybean oil in them were briefly popular, though not in the United States, until it was discovered that part of the filler was toxic to the body after breaking down.
Currently both saline and silicone implants are common. The silicone type came back in 2006, since it has been discovered. This method is safer than it was originally. This is much to the relief of some since this type is thought to look most natural. However, it might be a while until silicone implants become as popular as they once were, considering the amount of bad press they received years ago.
Clearly, the market for breast surgery has undergone several changes in the last 100 years or so. While there are two common types out right now, that does not mean there isn't room for more in the near future. Scientists and doctors alike are constantly coming up with new ideas that merely need to be tested, though few pass the battery of tests necessary to be put on the market officially.
Now that you know a bit about how augmentation got started, you should rest assured that the procedures currently available are the best right now.
