Breeding Golden Retrievers - A Tireless Effort

It feels really good to hold those tiny, little, new born Goldens in your arms. And the feeling is out of this world if they come from your own Golden dam. The feeling is so tempting that any dog lover can easily get inclined to breed his Golden Retriever female. Also, the prices of Golden puppies are quite high, when you go to buy one. This might instigate some inexperienced people to take up breeding golden retrievers for making some extra money.

Breeding golden retrievers is an extremely difficult project to take up. It is a process that requires meticulous, scientific and accurate research; and planning. It does not take only your love of Goldens to breed a Golden; you should have a concern for the breed as a whole. Breeding is not undertaken with the sole objective of producing litter. But it has higher aims like improving the breed by eliminating genetic disorders and other undesirable characteristic traits.

First of all, you should have a healthy, purebred Golden female with a healthy and good lineage. Before you set out to breed your Golden girl, you should wait for at least 2 years. It's recommended to breed adult dogs only after they reach 2 years of age. You will need to get the Golden medically examined and tested to find out if she has - any hereditary or partially hereditary disorders; health problems like hip dysplasia, cancer, etc. that this breed is prone to; any other diseases or infections. The dam should be in perfect health in order to get ready to conceive. And remember, this is going to be real heavy on your pocket. Besides health, the female's temperament is also extremely important. Along with the health, her characteristics will also be passed on to the litter. She should have all the good and desirable traits of the Golden breed in order to prove herself fit for breeding.

Once the dam is ready, it's time for sire hunting. You will need to find the most eligible, healthy, handsome, strong and energetic Golden male. You might need to travel far and wide, attend dog shows and meet other breeders in order to find an appropriate father to your future puppies. Again, the dog will have clear all the health tests as the bitch. Also, even when both of them are in perfect health, you will have to find out if they are medically and behaviourally compatible to each other, in order to mate and become parents. Again, costs are considerable. You will also have to pay the stud dog fees. After this, you will need to create conditions for your dam to get pregnant. You might need to ship your female to the male's kennel or arrange for the male's semen to be shipped to your kennel.

Once the female Golden is impregnated, you will have to make exhaustive efforts to keep her in good health and temperament. This will include providing healthy and nourishing food and environment, regular medical check-ups, etc. When whelping nears, you will have to be extremely careful and vigilant. Extreme care needs to be taken while birthing of puppies. A slight miss can prove fatal for the puppies or the mother or both. You should be ready with a vet, for emergencies. Sometimes C-sections are required.

After all these efforts and enormous expenses of both feelings and money, you will have your hands on your own tiny-tots, the tight-eyed delicate almost perishable golden puppies.

But breeding is not just this. It's an extended process that includes taking utmost care of the pups, nourishing them, nursing them if the mother is not fit enough and the list goes on with finding them good homes, keeping in touch with the buyer throughout the Golden's life and providing what is called the after-sales service'.
