"The thing about him we liked is that he's a dominant ground-ball guy," Melvin said. "We've been trying in the offseason to get pitchers who throw more strikes and more ground balls, and he's a little different look than some of our other [relievers]. He's not as much of a power guy."

Green has surrendered only 13 home runs in 250 appearances over five seasons, though he was pitching mostly at more spacious ballparks in Seattle and New York.

With Green, the Brewers have six bullpen spots likely spoken for. John Axford will be back as the closer, with left-handers Zack Braddock and Manny Parra and right-handers LaTroy Hawkins, Kameron Loe and Green setting him up. The final spot figures to be up for grabs among contenders like Mike McClendon, Brandon Kintzler, Justin James, Rule 5 Draft pick Pat Egan and perhaps lefty Mitch Stetter.
