Brick etching can provide you with some unique design options for public

, commercial and residential buildings. Bricks can be etched with patterns, symbols and fonts. The two main methods for brick etching are sandblasting and engraving. Sandblasting can be the more affordable option when it comes to brick etching but it will not provide the same uniform consistency as the slightly more expensive engraving method. With sandblasting some of the characters can be cut deeper than others and this can make the finished writing difficult to read. If you do want to provide a long lasting, attractive design for your brick etching project then engraving techniques can provide you with a superior and long lasting finish.

How to Order Brick Etching

You will first need to decide what message or image you want captured on your bricks. Then you will need to pick the most appropriate brick or paver. Not all types of bricks and pavers are suitable for etching so you will need to contact the provider for a list of options. For example concrete pavers are not as suitable as clay pavers as they can lose their colour over time and suffer from efflorescence (white salts staining the surface). Glazed bricks are a colourful and appealing option and can be used when you want a design that really stands out. Standard clay bricks are widely used in brick etching and these are available in a range of colours including terracotta red, sand/buff and slate blue.

If you are ordering online then the brick etching company will email you a form and you will then have to list the message/image you want etched into the bricks, the font and the colour. Make sure all of these details are correct as the order will be fulfilled from that form. This means if you have made any mistakes they will be replicated in the order. On average it will take around two to three weeks for the brick etching company to complete a small order (1 to 200 bricks). Larger orders could take up to four weeks. Check the delivery costs when you order and don't forget it is usually more cost effective to order in bulk.

Caring for Brick Etching

Brick etching will last as long as the brick or paver but the colours used to pick out the design can fade over the years. You can clean the etched brick carefully with some hot soapy water and a soft bristle brush to help brighten up the colours, but you should avoid using brick acid or jet washers as this can remove the colour completely.

There are a number of different ways in which you can use brick etching in your design projects. A common use is to commission 'specials', which are one off items such as signature bricks, house date bricks and marble/granite plaques.
