Someone has not felt "stressed out" at certain times in life? We have heard many times that "that person is with stress" or "go travel, you've been stressed out!".
There are people seeking treatment to "cure stress, need help because they walk stressed and your life is very broken. In bookstores, newsstands, restaurants, bakeries and a multitude of places we find self-help books on the subject stress.
After all, what is stress? The lexicographer Aurlio Buarque de Hollanda define stress (or stress) as "a set of reactions to the attacks the body's physical, mental, infectious and other capable of upsetting him homeostasis.
It is difficult to understand in practice what exactly are these reactions, and especially when this occurs is a sign that we need medical treatment or, more specifically, of psychiatric treatment.
What we mean by "STRESS"?
The stress is a specific state that is characterized by a series of changes in biological or psychological balance of a person and causing a feeling of imminent danger.
As the internal or external pressures outweigh the individual's ability to respond to them, there is a lack (breakdown) in the way this guy is organized. The breakdown that we call "stress. The internal pressures may be a biological (infection, pain, physical trauma and other diseases) or psychological (fear, frustration, grief) and those without are usually related to social and economic situations.
Physiologically, the stress is characterized by causing increased release of brain (or more specifically the pituitary gland) of a substance called adrenocorticotropic hormone or ACTH. This release hormone causes the adrenal gland (located above the kidneys) to release another hormone called cortisol. A series of situations are seen as stressful to cause a marked increase in the rate of secretion of cortisol. Among them: any type of trauma, infection, heat or cold, surgical interventions and debilitating diseases. Cortisol acts to increase through changes in body metabolism, energy sources (including glucose) to prepare the individual for a great physical and / or the psyche.
CAN DESIGNATE THE "STRESS"
AS A DISEASE?
The stress is not itself a medical illness, it does not meet basic criteria required for that. However, the stress can be both, as mentioned above, the individual's reaction to the onset of a disease (stress response), the situation triggering the disease (stress the stimulus).
Among the diseases and general medical (not psychiatric), some are famous for having its beginning or aggravation associated with stress. An example of this type of disease is bronchial asthma, often related to a stress precedes emotional crises. Other examples of this type are: ulcer, hyperthyroidism, impotence, infertility, allergic rhinitis, oesophagitis, dermatological conditions and many others.
Much of the research of psychiatric disorders were concerned to investigate whether the stress could be a predisposing factor for the different mental illnesses. That is, a biological or psychological tendency that a person would develop at some point in life, a mental illness
