Brief history of Lefkada, Ionian islands, Greece

The history of Lefkada starts from the ancient years and has a great interest. Although Lefkada belongs to Ionian island, the tiny distance from Etoloakarnania had obligedthe island to suffer under the Turkish possesion. However, this possesion had turned dramatically Lefkada's historical route in comparison with the other ionian islands. Lefkada took it's name from the white shores and the white rocks of cape Lefkatas, which means "white" in greek.

According to archaeological findings, Lefkada is inhabited from Neolithical Age. It's history starts since it was a Corinthians's colony, from the 7th century B.C. Until then, Lefkada was not divided from Akarnania. The Corinthians had dug a part of land, so they turned Lefkada into an island, and of course into a commercial centre.

Lefkada had been taken part in many battles of the ancient world, such as Plataies, Salamina and Peloponnisian War. In 338 B.C. the Macedonians under the orders of Filippos, father of Alexander the Great occupies the island. During the 2nd century B.C. , Lefkada was dominated from the Romans.

During the byzantine periof, Leucadians built the Castle of Aghia Mavra in order to protect themselves from the pirates. Into the castle there is the church of Aghia Mavra. Anesis Village Studios and Apartments is located only few km from the castle.

In 1474, the Turks dominated Lefkada, in 1684 the Venetians. In 1818, Ionian islands became independent state and in 1864 were reunited with Greece.

In 1953, a major earthquake had caused a great catastrophy . Hawever, Leucadians rebuilt their island, and at the last decades, Lefkada is one of the most popular destination around the world.
