Young people who are lucky enough to be able to do so can't wait today to head off on an international adventure.

Whether it's spending the summer working at a holiday park or on a Kibbutz, or a more ambitious quest to travel to some country which has held a long-term fascination, youngsters with the means to get out and see some of the world seem to head off just as soon as their A-levels are over, for a trip designed to let them see something different of the world, before they have to settle down to the rigours of their degree, or other post A-level course.

Sometimes, such trips set a pattern for future adventures abroad, giving the young person a true taste of independence, and the skills and some of the knowledge which they will find useful in the years to come.

It can be all too easy to see this as a time for simply knuckling down to some hard work, learning what life is about when having to work as part of a close-knit team which does almost everything together. But some who are lucky enough to be able to have this experience also use it as a chance to see some sights which have captured their imagination. And when they do that, it would be a great shame not to share some of the experience with family and friends back at home.

Taking a trip to a far-off land means using the opportunity to see something of the native culture, and as the visitor will be taking advantage of their host country's hospitality, it's only fair to give something back by buying a few suitable mementos, either for themselves, or to send back home to others who will be missing them while they are away.

In days when not having a mobile phone signal makes some people believe they are at the far reaches of civilisation, when someone really does get there, it's good to know that a parcel will still find its way home.
