Bringing Fiat back to the US

Bringing Fiat back to the US

After 27 years, Fiat is making its return to the United States. This change comes after Fiat took a controlling interest in the Chrysler brand, and made plans to combine the two automakers to become a larger player in the global auto industry. This month, the first "Fiat Studio" is opening at Village Motors in Los Angeles, and will be followed by 130 others around the country. Seven of these dealerships will be opened by AutoNation, the largest automobile retailer in the world.

The first model making its way to the U.S. will be the Fiat 500, a small, four passenger hatchback. The vehicle, which will compete with the likes of the Mini Cooper, Toyota Yaris, and Hyundai Accent, is likely to appeal to those looking for a cute, stylish, and exciting vehicle. The body shape is reminiscent of the 1960s Volkswagen Beetle, while the plastic body color appliqus on the dashboard offer a fun reminder that this is a newer and younger hatchback. With 300 hundred different color and trim combinations to choose from, the hatchback is also highly customizable. The three different trim levels, the Pop, Sport, and Lounge, and 10 different interior and exterior color choices allow consumers to design a vehicle that fits their needs and style, and gives a one-of-a-kind feel.

The 500 will be produced at a Fiat plant in Mexico. Although Fiat has yet to announce how many 500s will make their way to the U.S., the Mexican plant is built to produce 130,000 vehicles per year.

In addition to bringing the 500 to the United States, Fiat also has plans to begin selling Chrysler brand vehicles in Europe. Fiat now controls Jeep distribution overseas, where the off-road vehicles will be available at Fiat stores. Additionally, the Dodge Journey and Chrysler 300 will soon be sold as Lancias; however, before going on sale, both the Journey and 300 will be slightly remodeled to fit European taste. The automaker will also soon be developing new Chryslers, Fiats, Alfa Romeos, and Lancias that use a shared platform and engines. This plan will use a modified platform of the current Alfa-Romeo Giulietta, and will also introduce Alfa-Romeo vehicles to the United States in Fiat dealerships.

If this is the first you are hearing about Fiat's return, there is a good reason. The automaker has decided to stay away from the traditional types of advertising, and instead focus on newer mediums. This strategy has a lot of potential for success, since Fiat's target audience are not big television viewers to begin with. Instead, they are looking to reach their audience at events, such as the South by Southwest music conference, and social media networks.

The manual transmission, entry-level Pop starts at an MSRP of $15,500, while the Sport, also a manual, has an MSRP of $17,500, and the higher-end, automatic Lounge starts at $19,500. As far as fuel economy goes, the 500 is comparable to its competitors, receiving an estimated 30 mpg city and 38 mpg highway.
