Britain - Be Prepared For The Snow This Year

The past couple of winters in the UK will be remembered for their sporadic periods of snowfall that inevitably caused chaos on the roads

. Pictures of cars being abandoned in snow drifts and local supplies of grit falling woefully short are the lasting memories of the winters of 2009 and 2010.

So, with that experience behind us, will Britons learn their lesson and be more prepared for a cold snap this year? Evidence from some retailers actually suggests yes, as there appears to be healthy demand for winter travel equipment well in advance of the snow actually arriving. Some products that are proving popular include:

Snow Shovels

Snow shovels have been selling well even though it's still only autumn, perhaps because drivers have unhappy memories of trying to dig their car out of the snow using a makeshift scoop or a heavy metal spade. Snow shovels are designed to be lightweight, portable and easy to stow away in the car boot, so are an essential addition to every motorist's winter driving kit. They're also good for clearing the drive, front step or garden.

Snow Chains and Snow Socks

When we have a severe snowfall, the best advice is to avoid travelling where possible. However if it's absolutely essential for you to go out in your car, snow chains or snow socks that fit over your tyres can provide you with some welcome traction on snowy road surfaces. Metal snow chains offer the best grip, but snow socks are a great fabric alternative that are a little easier to fit, and are more than adequate for the sort of snow we get in the UK.

Lots of drivers have already bought theirs and have them stashed away ready to use when needed.

Snow Grips for Shoes

Most people probably fell or slipped over on the snow and ice last winter. While it can sometimes be funny, and most people get away with a bruised ego, it's also possible to really hurt yourself slipping on the snow. A lot of people are countering this by investing in a set of snow grips, which slip over your shoes to give you added control when out walking in wintry conditions.

As well as these handy products, stores are beginning to report rising sales of all the usual winter basics such as de-icer, ice scrapers, antifreeze, blankets, hi vis clothing and so on. So it seems many Brits have indeed begun to prepare for the big freeze this winter - all that remains now is to keep a close eye on the weather forecast.
