British BMX riders compete in Europe

Many people like to use their BMX bikes for a spot of recreation during the evenings and at weekends. However, there are those who like to take BMX one stage further and participate in competitions.

Recently, a number of riders from Braintree Bullets BMX Club headed to Europe to take part in the annual Velofollies Indoor BMX Championships in Belgium, the Braintree and Witham Times reports.

In total, 13 enthusiasts made the journey to Kortrijk, where they joined more than 1,200 other riders from a range of countries.

According to the publication, the Braintree Bullets representatives performed well against their competitors, with Jason Bridge and Julian Allen both taking part in the 30+ Masters class. They made it through to the final and were given outside gate positions. Mr Allen succeeded in crossing the line in fourth place, while his colleague was not far behind in seventh.

Meanwhile, earlier in the day, Brendan Watts and Taylor Andrews both made the semi-finals on their BMX bikes in the 17+ class and 15-year-old sections respectively.

The news source described the atmosphere at the event as "electric".

Across the UK there are many BMX clubs. They provide a focal point for those keen on the activity and serve to coordinate competitive events.

Located at the junction of Panfield Lane and Deanery Hill in Essex, the Braintree Bullets club uses a track that is open to the public at all times. At 400 metres long and featuring a number of jumps and bends, it is ideal terrain for people to hone their skills on two wheels.

Those eager to join the club have to have their own bikes and they must be in good condition. Also any stunt pegs should be removed. Meanwhile, gloves are a necessity for people who wish to take part in racing events, as are other protective clothing items, such as long trousers and helmets.
