Brotherood in Rome
What was said above about ecumenical dialogue since the end of the Council inspires us to give thanks to the Spirit of truth, promised by Christ our Lord to the Apostles and the Church (cf. Jn 14:26). This is the first time in history that efforts on behalf of Christian unity has assumed such great proportions and has spread to an area so vast. This is truly an immense gift of God, which deserves all our gratitude. From the fullness of Christ we receive "grace upon grace" (Jn 1:16). Recognize what God has already given is the condition which disposes us to receive those gifts still indispensable for bringing to completion the ecumenical work of the unit.An overview of the last thirty years to better understand many of the fruits of this common conversion to the Gospel which the Spirit of God has made the instrument of the ecumenical movement.42. It happens for example - in the spirit of the Sermon on the Mount - the Christians of one confession no longer consider other Christians as enemies or strangers but see them as brothers and sisters. On the other hand, the very expression separated brethren tends to be replaced today by expressions which more readily evoke the deep communion - linked to the baptismal font - which the Spirit fosters in spite of historical and canonical. It speaks of "other Christians", "other baptized," the "Christians of other communities."
The Directory for the Application of Principles and Norms on Ecumenism communities to which these Christians belong as "Churches and Ecclesial Communities not in full communion with the Catholic Church 69. This broadening of vocabulary is a significant change in attitudes. The sense of belonging to Christ deepens. I have seen many times in person, during the ecumenical celebrations which are an important part of my Apostolic Visits to various parts of the world, or in the meetings and ecumenical celebrations which have taken place in Rome. The "universal brotherhood" of Christians has become a firm ecumenical conviction. Consigning to oblivion the excommunications of the past, Communities which were once rivals are now in many cases helping one another, sometimes the places of worship are provided, they offer scholarships for the training of ministers of the Community more destitute, the involved with the civil authorities for protection of other Christians unjustly prosecuted, it demonstrates the unfounded calumnies they face certain groups. In a word, Christians have been converted to a fraternal charity which embraces all Christ's disciples. If that happens, because of violent political disturbances, situations emerged in a certain aggressiveness or a spirit of revenge, the authorities of the parties generally work to assert the "New Law" of the spirit of charity. Unfortunately, this spirit has not been able to transform every situation where brutal conflict rages.
The ecumenical commitment in these circumstances are often required to make choices which are truly heroic.Must be reaffirmed in this regard that acknowledging our brotherhood is not the result of liberal philanthropy or a vague family spirit. It is rooted in recognition of the oneness of Baptism and the subsequent duty to glorify God in his work. The Directory for the Application of Principles and Norms on Ecumenism calls for mutual recognition of official Battesimi70. This goes far beyond an act of ecumenical courtesy and constitutes a basic ecclesiological statement. Is fitting to recall that the fundamental nature of baptism in building up the Church has been clearly highlighted through dialogue multilaterale71.Solidarity in the service of humanity43. Is increasingly the case that the leaders of the Christian community together stand in the name of Christ, on important problems concerning man's calling, freedom, justice, peace, the world's future. In so doing they "communicate" in one of the constituent elements of the Christian mission: to remind the society in a way that is able to be realistic, the will of God, warning the authorities and citizens do not follow the slope that would lead to trample on the rights humans. Clearly, as experience shows, that in some circumstances the united voice of Christians has more impact than any one isolated voice.Leaders of the Community are not the only ones to join in this commitment to unity.
Many Christians from all Communities, by reason of their faith, are jointly involved in bold projects aimed at changing the world by inculcating respect for the rights and needs of everyone, especially the poor, the lowly and the defenseless. In the Encyclical Letter Sollicitudo Rei Socialis I found joy with this cooperation, stressing that the Catholic Church can not sottrarvisi72. In fact, Christians who once acted independently, are now engaged together in the service of this cause, for God's mercy may triumph. The logic is already one of the Gospel. For this reason, echoing what I wrote in my first Encyclical Letter Redemptor Hominis, the, I had occasion "to insist on this point and to encourage every effort in this direction at all levels in which we meet with our other brother Christians "73 and I thanked God for what he has already accomplished in other Churches and Ecclesial Communities and through them, as well as through the Church cattolica74. Today I am satisfied that the already vast network of ecumenical cooperation is constantly growing. Also to the influence of the World Council of Churches, is being accomplished in this field.
