, has been rocking stages since the early 1970s and has not slowed down since. Springsteen is known for his extensive, energetic shows that often last more than 220 minutes, longer than most solo artists and bands. He has always been known for his Americana sentiments that are usually focused on his hometown of New Jersey, poetic lyrics, and heartland rock.

Throughout his time in the music industry, Springsteen has sold over 120 million albums worldwide and 65 million right here in the United States. His awards collection includes an Academy Award, two Golden Globes, and 20 Grammy Awards. Springsteen is probably one of the most influential songwriters of the last century, which is why he is being honored as the Person of the Year for the 2013 MusiCares event. Bruce Springsteen tickets sales are not the only reason why he is being honored, however, because he has also done a significant amount of charitable work as well.

Growing Into a Star

Bruce Springsteen was in Long Branch, New Jersey in 1949 to a hardworking family. By the time Springsteen was seven, he had already developed a desire to become singer and musician after watching The Ed Sullivan Show episode which featured Elvis Presley. His mother bought him his first and second guitars when he was only a teenager. With the help of Tex and Marion Vineyard, Springsteen was able to eventually become the lead singer for a band called The Castiles in 1965. His nickname "The Boss" came from his time playing with a trio in New Jersey clubs in the late 1960s because he would collect the gig money from the club and then distribute it among the band members.

Although he continued to play with other bands, Springsteen spent time trying to form his own band and his own musical and lyrical style. Other bands he was associated with include The Bruce Springsteen Band, Sundance Blues Band, and Dr. Zoom & the Sonic Boom. With his list of bands and performances, and a glowing review by the San Francisco Examiner, Springsteen got an audition with Columbia Records in 1972. That gave him the opportunity to really showcase his talent, especially since he always praised his hometown of New Jersey on every stage he stepped on. He went on to sell out concerts in New York, Philadelphia, and New York but never forgot his upbringing.

After being signed, he brought other New Jersey musicians he had worked with to the studio and formed the E Street Band. He received high praise for his first album, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., and for his strong, poetic-like lyrics. Then in 1975, Born to Run was released and changed the world of rock and roll forever. Many of the songs from that album helped establish him as a rock legend. He would go on to record 17 albums in total with eight of them charting at number one on the Billboard charts, including his latest release, Wrecking Ball.

His work throughout the last 40 plus years and his accomplishments are why he is being honored.
